This is your final research paper for English 101… you must take it very seriously, as not only will it affect your grade, but also you are preparing yourself to write other research papers for other classes going forward.
Make sure you have an ARGUABLE thesis... not just a summative thesis. You must MAKE A POINT, have an evaluation, express a judgment, create a specific exact recommendation, and express your perspective on your focused narrow topic. Thus, you must have a SMALL topic, not some giant “save the world” topic that would take six books to “cover”… please, NARROW YOUR FOCUS. “Educational problems in the United States” would be a ridiculously large topic. “Candy sales in LAUSD middle schools” would be more like it… then you can have a thesis like, just as an example, “Candy should not be sold in school to LAUSD middle school students.” Notice the example thesis here is narrow and has an expressed opinion. The rest of the essay goes on to present the evidence to support the “candy should not be sold” thesis. Your arguable thesis, therefore, provides you a set track to run on, keeps you on that track to prove your point, provides a purpose, and provides interest as your reader decides whether or not to agree with you based on the evidence and logic you provide.
A college research paper essay is NOT just a summary of what other people think. It is an expression of YOUR judgment, perspective, OPINION on your topic, now that you know something about it after you’ve done some research. That’s what you’re being trained in: gather your information and THEN MAKE A DECISION, have an opinion, have some judgment about the information… it’s called “critical thinking” so show me you can do it in writing. You certainly must have the information (judgment without actual real information is called pre-judgment or prejudice), and you can and should consider other experts’ opinions and recommendations, but ultimately you are expected to formulate and express your OWN judgment. Don’t worry about whether I will agree or not… that’s not the point. If everybody would agree with your thesis, then why are you even writing about it? What would be the point of that? That’s what I mean by having an arguable thesis: some serious people might disagree… and your job ideally is to convince them over to your point of view, or at least make them see that your point of view is worth considering. But for that, you must actually HAVE an expressed point of view, and you must present your evidence in an orderly, properly formatted, cohesive manner.
Believe the parameters: Do NOT stop short… you need to have a goal of more than six
pages. If you have less than six FULL, totally full and complete, pages, then you will automatically get no credit for this paper: that is a guarantee, so heads up. You ought to aim for six-and-a-half or seven pages… seven solid, sensible, credible, organized, non-repetitive pages,
complete with all citations needed IN MLA FORMAT.
Note: you MUST use MLA FORMAT completely. You must demonstrate now that you are able to use it. This is a REQUIREMENT, so it is not optional. Be very serious about this paper. Do not wait until the last minute, which will almost certainly be fatal to your grade on this paper. Start it early. Use tutoring often along the way. Make sure all the grammar and spelling are PERFECT, as well as the MLA formatting including citations both in the essay itself and on
the Works Cited page.
This is the final project of a very serious class, and you are expected to do it very well.
