communications vs communications
Assignment #1: "Communication" vs. "Communications" (5% of your final grade)
Hello scholars!
Too often, people fail to understand the differences between "communication" and "communications". I want you to understand these difference so you clearly explain, defend, and apply your discipline as a manager/leader/coworker.
Carefully read/reread the following document. Answer the following questions:
1) What are the most important new insights you gained about "organizational communication"? What misconceptions (or anemic conceptions) did you have about "organizational communication"? When explaining your "organizational communication" degree to others, what will you now say is the purpose and application of studying organizational communication?
2) Based on these insights, how will you change your "communication" and "communications" be a more competent and effective manager/leader/coworker? Give examples.
3) A "philosophy" is a system of core values and beliefs concerning a given topic or area of life. I’m "Dr." Cox because I have a "Doctorate of Philosophy in Communication"; this means I hold a robust set of values and beliefs about communication principles/processes grounded in theory and research! Likewise, our graduate program will help strengthen your own "philosophy of organizational communication" as you learn the core values and beliefs of the discipline. How did reading this document help strengthen and expand your philosophy of organizational communication? Be specific!
Guidelines:
- Number your answers.
- 2 double-spaced pages; one-inch margins (Check those! Some programs and Macs often have screwy margins/spacing).
- FREE ADVICE: Most of you have never had me for class. When I ask for 2 pages, 1 page and a couple of sentences is not 2 pages! In fact, 1 page is unacceptable; 1.5 pages is getting closer but there may be more to develop/explain. 2 full pages reflects you’ve really tried to dig deep into the readings and develop your thoughts/arguments/explanations. Going a little over 2 is not terrible (but try editing it and using 10-point font)!
- Tab the first line of each new paragraph.
- Use Calibri or Times New Romans 10-12 pt. font.
- Number your answers (yes, I repeated myself).
- DO NOT repeat (copy/paste) the questions in the body of your essay! Double check your essay to ensure you clearly answered each question (and all sub-questions).
- No title/cover page. Include the title of the assignment (Assignment #1: Communication vs. Communications) and your name at the top of page one then start your essay.
- Your paper will be evaluated on depth of insight, quality of analysis and expression, as well as grammatical and mechanical quality.
Thanks, Dr. Cox
