Here is some about me that I wrote when I started writing the paper:
I was born in Russia, to a Russian mom and Armenian dad. I grew up being immersed in Armenian culture while surrounded by Russians. It didnt help that I lived in a small town with not a lot of exposure to others, and speaking 2 different languages made me stand out. My family moved here when I was 9 with the promise of a better future. I grew up with high expectations, whether set by my parents or myself. Like most children, I grew up having an idea of the many different careers I would grow up having. From Astronaut to Heart Surgeon, in my mind the possibilities were endless. I remember, however, the first time I bought a book on psychology. I read through the pages and was fascinated by the study of the mind. The mind is so vast and endless, yet predictable, and that fascinated me. In college I got into my first psychology class, and realized how effortlessly I was able to pick up on subjects and topics, and how long after the classes would end I would think about the topics we would discuss. At that point, my major was in biology, as my dream was to become a doctor. I was deeply influenced by the natural healing and decided to persue a degree in Naturopathic Medicine. I left California and began my journey in Seattle, WA at Bastyr University, pursuing a psychology Pre-Med degree with no support from my family. I was determined to continue my education despite ups and downs, facing financial difficulty and being alone for the first time in another state. Despite the set-backs and challenges I faced throughout the 5 years, I crossed the finish line with a bachelors degree.
Here is that I jotted down. It’s not perfect but this is very overwhelming for me.
Intentions for graduate study
My passion for learning and school has not been satisfied, as I would like to continue to expand my knowledge in the field of Psychology at School of Applied Behavior Analysis.
Background in the field of applied behavior analysis
I have first learned about ABA through a friend. He has suggested I apply and see wehre it takes me. Working as a nanny, I had enjoyed being surrounded by kids, and helping them grow was an opportunity I could not step away from. I began working as a BT in 2019, at the start of the pandemic. I have been told by multiple BCBAs how naturally I am able to pick up on information, and provide therapy.
Providing in-home services is a lot more personal, as I am welcomed into the home by families to help their child grow. I am able to witness first-hand how many hours of work, communication between my BCBA and me had allowed my clients to blossom, open up their language skills, begin reading, and stepping up for themselves on the playground.
And contributions that you intend to make to the field
As I continue working in the field as a Behavior Technician, I open my eyes to the many possibilities and forms therapy can take. I browse the internet and find information that would allow me to expand my knowledge and provide better services. I read many different perspectives on ABA, from the worried parents to the adults who have gone through ABA. Their insight, and experiences, whether positive or negative allow me to self-reflect and correct my own behavior. I am a big advocate for children to be treated in a way that most adults would want to be treated.
