IT302M1-1: Examine human-computer interaction theories and principles
IT302M1-1: Examine human-computer interaction theories and principles.
Purpose
PowerPoint is a great interface to start your assessments in this course. You will create a presentation to introduce the study of human computer interaction.
Make sure you follow all instructions below and scroll to the very bottom of the PDF to ensure you have read all instructions.
Part 1: Exploring Human Computer Interaction
Content and Design
Complete the following PowerStart activity .
The PowerStart activity provides instructions and examples to help you be successful with this module’s assessment. Take a few minutes and complete this
before starting your assessment.
Use a PowerPoint theme (as instructed in the PowerStart activity) and present the following:
Cover slide with the following:
A title, the course and unit numbers, and your first and last names.
One relevant image locked in through the slide master. (See the practice assignment in the PowerStart activity.)
Slides 2–4: Explanation of at least three events in the history of human computer interaction.
Put each event on a separate slide.
Present your three events in chronological order. Include the year on the slide, and briefly explain what happened.
Write in your own words (no quotes, no copying).
Provide an APA in-text citation on each of these three slides to show where you found the information.
Slides 5–6: Heuristic analysis of two of the interaction styles described in Chapter 3 of the textbook. The textbook discusses the five primary interaction styles:
direct manipulation, menu selection, form fill-in, natural language, and command language. They are discussed in more detail in later chapters as well. Select
two styles to analyze.
Put each interaction style on a separate slide.
Describe each style using key questions of what/how, where/when, and who/why.
Discuss the type of application or task for which the style works best.
Write in your own words (no quotes, no copying).
Citation is not required for these slides.
Slide 7/8: Analysis of an interface. Choose a website or an application you use frequently. Explain the purpose of the site. Look at critically from a usability
perspective. What do you like about the interface? What would you improve if you were on the design team? Why do you think it was designed the way that it
was? Include a screenshot in your critique.
Slide 8: Reflection about the definition and meaning of human computer interaction.
Write in your own words (no quotes, no copying, and no source material).
Provide at least 40 words.
Slide 9: Reference slide with complete APA entries for the textbook and the sources used for the historical events slides.
Additional Requirements:
Do not write in the “notes” section of your PowerPoint file. All content must appear on the slides.
Any images retrieved from Microsoft Office Online or available through links in PowerPoint do not have to be cited, but all other images or screenshots must
be accompanied by the full web address where the images were found and placed on the same slide as the image.
Do not use Wikipedia, user-answer sites, message boards, or similar resources for your work in this module. Look for quality work prepared by qualified
professionals. When in doubt, ask your professor about a source’s appropriateness.
Written work should be free of spelling, grammar, and APA errors. Points deducted from the grade for each writing, spelling, or grammar error are at your
instructor’s discretion.
Please see Academic Writer found under Academic Tools in the classroom to assist you with meeting APA expectations. Ensure that your work is not copied
from any sources. Copying does not prove an understanding of the material, and plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Part 2: Understanding Frameworks
Purpose
®
® ®
This assessment investigates several different concepts from this module’s readings, and you will prepare an APA-formatted paper to prove your
understanding.
Assignment Instructions
Section 1: Interaction Framework Research
Choose either Norman’s execution/evaluation action cycle or the four level approach to complete this part of the assessment. Then locate one other source
about your choice of framework. Use this other source (not the textbook) as the basis for this part of your paper.
In one paragraph:
Identify the framework/approach you chose.
Describe the main parts of your chosen framework and summarize other information provided in your source related to this framework: it might be an
example, its uses, or its shortcomings.
Pick a sample process and explain how each step or phase would be applied to your example.
Do not quote; write only in your own words.
Include in-text citation for your source.
Minimum length is 130 words
Section 2: Device Assessment
Select a computing device that you use often. Choose a cell phone, ebook reader, or tablet. Then write an evaluation, answering the following questions in your
own words (do not use source material for this part):
For your first paragraph:
Overview
Identify the device and its purpose, intended user, and typical location for use (if any). Include an image of the device you selected.
For your second paragraph:
Mapping
Explain how easy it is to determine possible actions on this device.
Explain the mapping from intention to physical movement on the device.
For your third paragraph:
Use by the Novice
Explain what you think may be the novice user’s understanding between system state and their interpretation of that state.
Describe possible confusions that might arise for novice users.
Write in your own words, write in full sentences, and do not copy the instructions. The minimum length requirement for this part of your assessment is 150
words.
Section 3: Gulf of Execution
What is a gulf of execution? Why is it important to minimize in the electronic world? Some simple additional research online may help clarify the gulf of
execution and its importance in interface design.
In one paragraph, and in your own words:
Define gulf of execution.
Give an example of how this might present itself in the workplace. The example must reflect a gulf of execution from a digital device.
Write at least 60 words, and do not use source material for this part. Write from experience and your understanding of the reading material.
Section 4: Mental Models
The textbook describes mental models. You know that they rely on the individual human’s perception.
In one paragraph, and in your own words:
Explain and give details about why it is still important to consider mental models in interaction design.
Write at least 60 words, and do not use source material for this part. Write from experience and your understanding of the reading material.
Section 5: Applying the concepts.
List two groups of software/website users that have special needs.
For each group, suggest a way that interfaces could be improved.
How could using Norman’s execution/evaluation action cycle when considering these groups help with design?
How could the use of mental models help?
Write at least 100 words. Write from experience and your understanding of the human computer interaction and the limitations within the interface. Cite any
references that are used.
Provide a final page of properly formatted APA reference entries.
Please remember you can find more information on APA formatting in the Writing Center within the Library.
Write in your own words (no quoting, no copying).
Use the textbook and/or other appropriate academic sources when required to perform research. Cite properly in APA format.
Write a subheading for each of the four main parts, in your own words, to identify main ideas.
Additional Requirements
Submit your work as a Word document in APA format. You must use a 10- or 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font and meet other formatting
requirements. Please note that an abstract page and table of contents are not required.
Cite your sources within the body of the paper and provide a list of references at the end on a separate reference page. In-text citations and references should
be properly formatted according to APA guidelines.
Use subheadings for each part of the paper so that your professor clearly sees where each of the parts begins.
For more information on APA style formatting, go Academic Writer under Academic Tools in this module or visit the Writing Center.
Also, review the university policy on plagiarism. If you have any questions, please contact your professor.
Written work should be free of spelling, grammar, and APA errors. Points deducted from the grade for each writing, spelling, or grammar error are at your
instructor’s discretion.
Ensure that your work is not copied from any sources. Copying does not prove an understanding of the material, and plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Directions for Submitting Your Assessment
Use the following convention to name your assessment: IT302-M1-LastName-FirstName, where your own name is typed (example: IT302-Module1-JemisonMae). Submit the completed document as an attachment to the Module 1 Dropbox before the deadline.
