My best course: Health Policy Leadership (in Conjunction with Summer Health Policy Issue Lecture Series) HAP 746
The course examines leadership strategies to influence health policy making from a community stewardship and interest group advocacy perspective. Students will develop an understanding of how health and socio-economic issues affect the development, implementation and change of health policy, appreciate the complexity of engaging the public policy process and selectively employ strategies to influence politics and the policy making process.
 
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Analyze how leadership roles may be utilized to influence policy-making and policy stewardship.
  • Selectively employ options for stakeholder involvement to influence health policy and/or engagement in the political process.
  • Evaluate the health and social system leadership strategies germane to organizational system change and interdisciplinary stakeholder involvement.
  • Develop and apply an action plan to influence public policy for a selected health policy related issue.
  • Synthesize research from a variety of sources to identify policy amenable problems and/or needs, policy goals and public health policy.

My most difficulit course: Quantitative Methods in Health Care Management HAP 708
 
A quantitative methods course that presents a framework for decision making in health care management. Covers epidemiological, statistical and decision modeling tools commonly used in health care management. Includes measures of risk, forecasting, decision trees and statistical quality control. Students use Excel to analyze data sets related to the application of these techniques in assessing health care related problems.
 
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Write clear reports that summarize findings from data analyses in evaluating health care problems
  • Construct and deliver presentations related to findings from data analyses studies.
  • Analyze and describe basic epidemiological measures of health care with applications to health care delivery settings.
  • Apply statistical quality control tools in evaluating health care problems.
  • Build and evaluate decision models for health care settings.
  • Formulate solutions to a health care decision-making problem based on forecasting techniques.
  • Apply quality control tools in evaluating health care problems.
  • Analyze existing data sets related to health care problems using Excel.
