Term Paper (4-5 Pages)
Due: August 10th
Write an essay that responds to one of these prompts; or, write an essay contains an original argument about Frankenstein or Heart of Darkness, one other historical/critical text, and at least one of our course themes.
Here are some possible prompts.
For Frankenstein:
1. Write an essay that connects a contemporary “monster” (environmental, political, scientific, artistic, etc.) to the monstrosity, anxiety, and cultural criticism reflected in Shelley’s Frankenstein. You may discuss any contemporary event or work of your choice. It should reference Frankenstein, at least one of our historical/critical texts, and one of our course themes.
2. Shelley’s creature in Frankenstein is often seen as a reaction to the confidence and utopian visions of both the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. How do either the creature or Frankenstein reflect or challenge one of the other readings from the course thus far. Make sure to reference passages from Frankenstein, at least one of our class readings, and one of our course themes.
3. Pick one of the minor characters (not Victor or “the creature”) in Frankenstein and discuss how they might represent some of the early examples of a modern individual. Make sure to reference passages from Frankenstein, at least one of our class readings, and one of our course themes. Make sure this essay isn’t just a portrait of a character but contains a specific argument as well.
For Heart of Darkness:
1. Over the course of the semester, we have dealt with a number of texts that have been influential in shaping modern culture both in Europe and in other parts of the world—especially in relation to the developments in science and technology.
Using Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness as a primary text, make an argument that considers specific European interactions with other parts of the world and explain how interregional cultural connections (economic, geographical, and/or political) and scientific and technological developments shaped ideas, beliefs, and values in the modern and contemporary world.
You may use more than one historical/scientific text, but I recommend focusing on one text in particular that you can juxtapose with Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. You may choose any other text from the course: from Machiavelli to Gandhi, but make sure that you have a central argument to make about the two texts, and that you also discuss them in light of one of our course themes (ex. human, nonhuman, inhuman; colonialism, postcolonialism; science and alchemy, etc.).
2. How does Conrad’s Heart of Darkness challenge or problematize the political, cultural, scientific, or other advancements (pick one) of the Modern World? Focus on a specific character or theme in the novel and connect it to at least one of our historical readings, and one of the larger course themes.
Guidelines:
1. The paper should be at least four full pages and no more than five.
2. The paper should cite examples from the novel and at least one other text from our readings and reference at least one theme or term from our course themes and the lectures.
3. The paper should have a thesis statement or controlling idea that unifies your argument.
4. The paper should have a title, use 12-point font, and use in-text citations in MLA format. (No works cited page is necessary unless you reference a contemporary text or event.)
5. You may use ideas you have already generated from the discussion posts or class discussions. But you must develop and sharpen the language and ideas for the final product of this more formal occasion.
6. Grammar and spelling are important factors in this formal paper. But the most important is the argument itself, which should demonstrate your ability to synthesize the ideas from multiple texts into a coherent argument that responds to the demands of the prompt.
