Some historians have argued that the Civil War was a Second American Revolution that gave a new birth to the nation. Others have argued that the Civil War was really the end of the American Revolution, as it finally settled the questions raised by independence, as the country began to fulfill the promise of the Declaration of Independence. Both of these views see the roots of the conflict in the ideas of liberty, equality, and democracy.
