In your response to your collegue post, consider their response as to how visual processing impacts day-to-day life. What potential improvements might you suggest to help overcome these weaknesses or capitalize on strengths?
My Collegue post:
Each of the activities provided in this module were able to highlight specific things regarding the study of cognitive processes related to visual processing. Through isolating elements of the visual system we employ everyday, these controlled environments or sequences of stimuli were able to establish a few things. For instance, the blind spot exercise displayed the physical limitations of our visual systems dealing with peripheral perception. The visual search and facial recognition exercises highlighted the process by which particular stimuli are perceived, filed, and analyzed under two very different environments related to time. In both cases, we observed how quickly our brain works to analyze and manipulate visual stimuli to accomplish different goals based on the task at hand. This process in itself is reflective of the brain’s adept ability in creating shortcuts that allow us to effectively react to the world around us. More times than not, our own cognitive biases become apparent through examining the gap between raw stimuli and the perceptions we are able to create.
One specific example of something related to the visual system that I took note of was the blind spot exercise. This display of the physical limitations of our peripheral vision was extremely interesting and relevant to my everyday work. As an athlete, I have in fact participated in applied sports science/cognitive/visual exercises that measure a player’s “perceptual field” as they called it. The objective was to move around the field and to document speed and accuracy of a player’s ability to report accurate positions of mannequins. Ultimately, the study enabled us to highlight specific angles that represented respective blind spots for each player. We were then coached on body position and awareness of our surroundings in specific situations related to our positions on the field that were meant to cover those perceptual gaps and theoretically give us greater “access” to what’s happening on the field. **Some guys thought it was BS, but lots of us actually saw the value in it and felt we improved as a result; interesting either way.
