View Comparisons Essay
There is a thesis statement provided in the assignment instructions. You need to write your paper in support of this thesis:
Thesis: The viewpoint of a news source influences the opinions expressed in the articles it publishes.
Use this (exactly as it is) as the thesis statement for your Viewpoints essay. Don’t edit or change it….exactly as it is. And, make sure you include it.
This assignment is about Media Bias. Be sure that you have read Chapter 7 in the text about Viewpoints. The diagram on page 205 at the bottom shows a spectrum of political bias, and on page 207, you can see some publications and the points of view they reflect. We also reviewed a chart and video in class on Saturday. As critical thinkers, we need to be aware of bias and other filters that may affect the news we read.
You may find the following video helpful as a review of media bias. Here’s the URL (which you may have to copy and paste into your brower): https://study.com/academy/lesson/media-bias-criticism-definition-types-examples.html

You are instructed to select a news story (not an editorial or OP Ed…a news story). An editorial is opinion, and we’ll be analyzing an editorial in a future assignment. So, be sure that your story is a news story. An example of a news story could be the latest news about getting vaccinated for Covid-19, or it could be a world story, such as what’s happening in Afghanistan. Choose a current news story and then look at how that same story is reported in two different news media. You could also find Editorial/Op-ed/Opinion pieces on these same issues, so scrutinize your articles to make sure they are news stories.
Once you’ve selected your news story, you could go to that list on page 207 (or select other media with which you are familiar, such as CNN and Fox News…they don’t have to be on this list). Now, I might select a conservative news outlet, such as the Wall Street Journal and a Left Progressive source, such as Mother Jones, and compare how each of them reports that story today. Look through each of these news sources and find their reporting on the story that you selected. Does the Wall Street Journal show a conservative bias in their story? Does Mother Jones show a different bias? How is it evident? See the full assignment instructions under the Assignments tab.
This assignment is NOT about writing about two sides of gun control, or abortion, or some other controversy. But, it could have something to do with these issues….for example, if I select a story about a shooting…I might find that the conservative reporting doesn’t say much about gun control and the left leaning news story talks about gun control. Look at how two sources report the news, but don’t go into an analysis of the pros and cons of the issue. This essay is not about examining a controversy such as gun control, abortion, etc. from two sides. It is about observing media bias and how different media report the same news story.
