The Life of Shirley Jackson[Hook ] Imagine living a life in which you feel trapped, as if you were in a restrictive state and bound to a life of eternal loneliness that is unescapable. Being a mother of four and a housewife in the mid-twentieth century, [Background Information] Shirley Jackson often felt as though this was the kind of life she was living. At the time, housewives did not have a whole lot of freedom to pursue any personal ambitions or goals. The home where they would raise their children and make happy memories as a family would turn into somewhat of a figurative prison. Jackson battled with her mental health and placed her frustration within her writing. The life that she lived made her feel many different things that were often reflected vividly in her works. One of Jacksons most infamous works was a short story title The Lottery, which revealed the horrors of organized human cruelty. [Thesis Statement] Although she struggled with her mental state throughout her whole life, Jackson didnt let that affliction affect her work in a negative way instead it gave her an outlet for expression. [Topic Sentence]Throughout her early years, Jacksons relationship with her mother had a tremendous effect on her writing. Her mother would often push her to act or dress in a fashion that wasnt her own. It seemed as if she wasnt as feminine as her mother would have liked or even preferred. Quote Integration [ Introduce it] Carole Smith, author of Shirley Jackson 1919-165, wrote about Jacksons early years and describes the difficult things that she struggled with. [Insert it] Smith emphasized how as a child, Shirley struggled with her circumscribed surroundings and her mothers emphasis on decorum and gender-appropriate activities. She balked at her mothers efforts to groom and prettify her, an attitude she carried into adulthood by rarely combing her hair and paying little
attention to dress and weight. Throughout Jacksons life, her mother criticized what she saw as Shirleys tendency toward slovenliness (25). [Explain it] This shows that Jackson never truly cared what anyone else thought about her. She was resistant to change and did her best to strive to be who she really was. Knowing oneself is difficult to achieve, and is indeed an amiable quality that Jackson possessed, even at an early age. Her defiance against her mother to maintain who she was, eventually, caused a rift in their relationship. Even though Jackson had troubled feelings towards her mother, she attempted to have a better relationship with her. [Summary Sentence]Through several attempts for a healthier relationship with her mother, it proved to be unsuccessful and this became the catalyst that plunged Jackson into writing.
