Select an example of gender inequality in the workplace. The example can be taken from a novel, a movie (for example, Norma Rae, 9 to 5, Erin Brockovich, Suffragette), a documentary, or even from your own personal experiences. Analyze your example in terms of the four explanations for the inequality of women that are discussed in the course readings. In your analysis, provide illustrations for how each of these explanations may (or may not) have some relevance to your chosen example. In your conclusion, evaluate the strengths and limitations of each of these explanations. Is each explanation relevant to your example, or are some of them irrelevant? Finally, are there any other possible explanations (not included in the course discussion) that could be used to further analyze and understand your example?
As a practical exercise, visit at least two of the following organizations in or near your own neighborhood:
a local foodbank
a local soup kitchen—for free breakfast or other hot meal services
a local homeless, emergency, youth/runaway, or domestic violence (safe house) shelter or drop-in centre
During your visit, make field notes of your immediate observations, and when you return home, write a brief essay that discusses your overall impressions, including description, analysis, and conclusions.
Analyze the rise of the Occupy movement and discuss some of the reasons that may have contributed to its decline in recent years. Review the historical origins of the Occupy Wall Street movement in Zuccotti Park, and its later migration to other countries, including Canada. Discuss how its leadership structure (or lack of structure) and tactics may have weakened its political impact over the last few years. Also, describe some of its spin-offs into other organizations (such as Black Lives Matter), and evaluate its contributions to several different movements and their campaigns.
