You have explored the history of psychology from a critical race theory perspective. We have seen the processes of European colonialism, and the spread of Euro-centric intellectual processes and White supremacist ideologies as a product of that colonialism. We have explored the ways Black, Latinx, and Indigenous racial and ethnic group members have been affected by colonialism, slavery, and genocide.

We have seen how ethnic minority psychologists rose up in the 1960s and 70s to resist the deficit-based Euro-centric psychological models and then developed their own strengths-based models based on the paradigms of their historic cultural and spiritual practices, and how they have enacted forms of resistance to assimilationist political, economic, and social forces.

Questions

What are your views on the experience of psychologists and the development of culturally responsive psychology in these groups? Consider the historical processes of colonization, and contemporary decolonization, these groups of psychologists have begun to address as they reclaim psychology from Euro-centric notions of behavior and mental processes. 

Choose at least one group (Black, Latinx, or Indigenous), and discuss how you think psychology has, or has not, treated these groups with justice, dignity, and worth. Discuss whether, why, or why not, and how, Psychology can move forward to respectfully recognize the importance of these marginalized voices as the field develops and grown in the future.

Finally, be sure to respectfully include your own personal feelings about the history of psychology toward these marginalized groups, and how you feel about the future of psychology in the context of these marginalized groups.
