OPINION:
Green computing can be defined as environmentallyresponsible and eco-friendly use of computers and their resources. In broaderterms, it is also defined as the study of designing, engineering,manufacturing, using, and disposing of computing devices in a way that reducestheir environmental impact. In 1992, the U.S environmental protection agencylaunched the Energy Star program, which gave birth to the term greencomputing.
There are many ways to practice green computingincluding utilizing sleep mode on your computer, utilizing high energy starrating technology including home appliances. Practicing a repropose or reusemodel for electronics in home use or at a corporation level.
In my opinion, green computing is possible, andovertime will provide benefits to our environment. From my reading there isstill not much data out about the statistical benefits from green energy.Common sense would tell us that transitioning to an energy efficient businessmodel and home set up would not only reduce our carbon footprint but alsoreduce overhead costs. It is estimated that out of $250 billion per year spenton powering computers worldwide only about 15% of that power is spentcomputing, the rest is wasted idling (i.e., consumed by computers which are notin use but still turned ON). That consumed energy is the main reason of CO2 emission,thus, energy saved on computer hardware and computing will equate tons ofcarbon emissions saved per year.
