Good evening everyone, I hope you are all doing well.
Good evening everyone, I hope you are all doing well. This week we are asked to discuss two original icons and what they would be used for and three states for each with an explanation of their purpose. Truthfully, I keep finding myself confused by these questions. At first, I thought perhaps a known web logo like Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, or Instagram’s symbols would be an appropriate original icon to discuss. Thankfully, I stopped in my tracks to realize I was interpreting the assignment completely wrong.
However, with that being said, the term icon does not only describe significant individuals, but also refers to a representation of a graphic character within a program. Two original icons are the menu icon and the toolbar icon. As we all may know, the menu is used for users to select functions of an application or webpage and can also be referred to as the hamburger menu because of the three horizontal lines. The menu icon was developed to be used “to leave more room for content” on mobile devices and some web pages have taken on the icon as well for their design purposes. (Shneiderman et al., 2021) The three states of the menu icon are the literal menu spelled out and the contents appear once selected, the menu icon as mentioned previously with possibly other related icons within that category and the three vertical dot menu icon used for more menu options. The toolbar icon is used to access computer commands. An example is a toolbar found in Microsoft Word with the subtitles like “file, home, insert, etc.” Three states of that icon are tool palettes that give users options like icons and widgets, the toolbar icon very visible across the heading of a screen and ribbons can be an icon of their own but it can also represent a toolbar icon and menu icon to have the same functions.
Good Evening,
Not sure if I am getting this right or not but the first icon I have chose is a button as an image (which I used in my user interface). Of course you could have just an image with a button next to it but having the image double as a button makes it a more interactive environment. One state of this would be when the image is not being interacted with and it is just there without any actions being taken on it. Another state of this icon would be when the mouse hovers over the image/button. When this happens there are multiple options you could use such as changing the appearance of the cursor, highlighting a border around the image, or darkening the image. All of these would be ways to let the user know that the image can be interacted with. The last state which I used was to display text after the image/button is clicked. This text is just informational text about the image.
Another simpler icon type would be the common check boxes that you see. The states that are involved with these include obviously an unchecked state and a checked state, but when working with a user interface you need a way to uncheck an already checked box if a new one is checked, that is if there is only expected to be one checked. This is something that I have not yet learned how to do but am working on.
An emerging I/O device that has recently been improving is wireless headphones and they have had a major impact on design. Remember when you had to open your phone to change volume or change songs? Now it can be done without having visual contact with your phone or even the output device whether it be headphones or a speaker. Many headphones can just be touched in a certain place, held for a specified amount of time, or take input from a swiping action. Additionally popular brands support voice control. I don’t imagine that a phone could be completely 100% controlled by voice but they already can achieve a great amount without touch. I think interface designs will continue to move towards taking less and less effort to operate.
