Field Observation and Paper

Students will carry out a 30 minute observation of an adolescent or young adult person in any setting, such as a park, classroom, or home.  It is not necessary to speak with the person to do the observation.  In fact, it is not recommended that you engage in a conversation with a person you do not know, unless you have the express permission of the minor’s parent or guardian. For this assignment you may also use a non-fiction film example of adolescent behavior.

Write a 3 – 4 page summary of your experience, using APA style for citations and reference list, using at least three (3) references to the literature.  You may use the course textbook as your source. Note the approximate age of the person, and any biological, behavioral, cultural/social, and cognitive characteristics.  Discuss your observations in light of what we are reading and discussing in the course. Discuss applications for developmentally appropriate teaching and/or counseling practices.
