Ethical Analysis

Students will select a company or organization and complete a full ethical analysis based on credible resources about that company (Annual reports, legal filings, credible news articles, etc.) The paper will cover any ethical considerations covered in class and the students evaluation of the company based on their ethical profile. The student may provide recommendations for the companys future. The paper length should be 10 pages.

Instructions:

Using information gained throughout this course to guide your analysis, you will write a 10 page paper detailing your assessment of the company and creating an ethical profile for that company. 

• This paper should detail the topics that have been covered in class so far, and should include information on that companys:  

• Financials/Operations– This should include how well the CEO is paid compared to the rest of the workforce, how they commit funds (do they try to maximize profits for shareholders only or do they attempt to include other stakeholders in their strategy?) How do they treat their employees, and do they seem to care about their employees wellbeing?

• Whistleblowing and internal controls– are you able to find information on the companys policies on whistleblowing and internal controls and how effective are these systems?

• Corporate Social Responsibility  Does the company engage in any CSR initiatives? Do they go above and beyond when it comes to ethics? Do they simply adhere to compliance and legal matters, or do they go above and beyond to ensure ethical business practices?

• International Business (if applicable)– Does the company conduct business abroad? If so, how do they manage US culture vs. host country culture? Have they had any issues operating abroad?

• Overall Ethical Analysis– Overall, do you believe that this company operates in an ethical manner? Where do they fall short? Where do they excel? Please use information on philosophers and philosophies as a metric to measure the ethics of the company (for instance, if you are measuring the company through the tenets of utilitarianism, please state that and indicate how the company espouses utilitarian ideals).

This paper should not be solely focused on Corporate Social Responsibility. CSR should be discussed in your paper, but the other topics above must also be addressed. Your paper must include proper citations, and include at least 5 references, which are properly cited throughout your paper.
