The Western Hemisphere has long been plagued by the specter of racism linked to the horrors of the transatlantic trade in African slaves. 5 million Africans were brought to Brazil to live as slaves. Another 5 million were carried to various parts of the rest of the Circum-Caribbean. And 500,000 were brought to the United States. However, the role of Black pirates has been obscured and distorted in the scholarship on The Golden Age of Piracy. Why? How? How and why were the histories of the Lafitte brothers and Savary selectively, if unconsciously, edited? How common were Black pirates? What roles did Black pirates serve on crews? What were relationships like between pirates and slaves of African descent and origin? What impacts did Haitian independence have on piracy in the Caribbean?
