ABSTRACT
An understanding of the culture of an organization is vital when implementing change. The change will always create tension with organizational culture because it redefines the way things are done throughout the organization. Culture plays a huge part in determining how people behave at work, including how they access and act upon information, influence and are influenced by others, and make decisions and allocate resources. Organizational culture is a combination of the unspoken values, beliefs, assumptions, and motivations which shape behaviors and decision-making at all levels of an organization. Given the esoteric nature of organizational culture, it is not always easy or straightforward to analyze and define. The best way to really understand an organizational culture is to examine it with the people who work in it every day.
Understanding organizationalcultureNo two organizations and no two change initiatives are ever the same. In order toshape a successful approach to your change, you need to analyze and understandthe following four fundamental factors about your particular change situation:1 The culture of the organization2 The type and impact of the change3 The attitudes and concerns of stakeholders4 The potential for resistance.Together, the way these four factors present themselves in your particular situation will enable you to shape your change approach to maximize the potentialfor your stakeholders to engage with, support, and ultimately choose to adoptand embed your change. The next four chapters explore each of these in turn, and they are brought together in Chapter 6: Shaping Your Change Plan. What is organizational culture?Organizational culture is a combination of the unspoken values, beliefs, assumptions, and motivations which shape behaviors and decision-making at all levels ofan organization. It is often defined as the way we do things around here (Deal andKennedy, 1982) or, as often paraphrased, the way we do things around here whenthe boss isnt looking. Culture plays a very powerful part in determining howleaders, managers, and staff think and act whilst at work, but very few people areaware of its existence, let alone understand how much it influences their behavior.
