1. Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) include a set of 4 nutrient based reference values for nutrition values in our food. The four values are Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), Adequate Intake (AI), Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) and Estimated Average Requirement (EAR). Unless it is stated differently all values given for the 4 nutrient values, they represent the quantity of the nutrient or food to be supplied in a diet based on the average diet. The DRIs apply to healthy individuals. If someone is severely deficient in a vitamin or nutrient that is listed, the suggested amount displayed may not be enough for that individual. This could be due to health conditions that cause malabsorption or malnutrition. A qualified medical doctor or nutritionist would need to give direction to individuals with health issues to see what they would recommend for their specific nutritional needs. The RDA calculation is RDA = 1.2 x EAR. EAR is an estimate of the variance of intake, and is also used in the assessment of the intake of groups. The AI is set when data is insufficient to establish an EAR, or an RDA would be based. Both AI and RDA are to be used as a goal for our individual intake. UL is the highest level of daily nutrient intake that could cause a risk to someone’s health. That is why the word tolerable is used in the description. Just because your body can handle it, doesnt mean you should consume that level. UL is based on an evaluation conducted by using the methodology for risk assessment of nutrients. These levels are put in place to help us reach a healthy dietary goal for our nutrition.

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) is the highest average intake that has not rick with healthy effects, but health risk increases with an intake of nutrients above the UL. US has little or not enough research to define for all nutrients. The estimated energy requirement (EER) are average intakes in a healthy adult. Age, Gender, and others, that are physical, have a higher intake EER then with a person with lower activity levels. The Acceptable Micronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR) intakes carbohydrates, fats, and proteins is a reduced risk for chronic disease with accurate levels of nutrient percentage of energy and calories expressed by AMDR.
