The New York Times is addressing its current issue revolving around the concepts of their diversity and which people are impacted relative to their position and their ethnicity. According to the article coming from New York Times internal study, women of Asian descent have said that they were more likely to be mistaken for another woman of their ethnicity. Likewise, Mexican and African American people also recorded their same concerns, and it was supported by data showing that African American workers in non-leadership roles had a far greater likelihood of leaving the company than those in leadership positions. They obtained the majority of their data through interviews to which they claimed to have reached a stark conclusion. After a period of eight months, the conclusion drawn was that the difficulty for people at New York Times was great for a wide variety of individuals all with different backgrounds. The report stated, Our current culture and systems are not enabling our workforce to thrive and do its best work. With the number of people that work at the New York Times, it is interesting to read about them becoming so self-aware that they are addressing a fundamental fault that outlines tensions at their workplace. One of the more interesting facts is that they point out that they have had difficulties with sexual orientation, gender identity, ability to work, socioeconomic background, ideologies, and race. They continue to admit that the most difficult category for them to address is how unsettling and troublesome it is for people of color to work in an environment where they describe it as a painful day-to-day experience. This is all a result of the nationwide protests against the hateful treatment of those with diverse qualities and backgrounds.
Based on our reading I can say that there is definitely a means to address ethnocentrism inside the workplace. In their article, they use a direct experience of the nationwide protests as a means to diversify and aspire to be more inclusive. With the quantity of people that live in this world, one would think that diversity is an inherent quality of life; however, it seems that people require a little push in order to get themselves moving in a direction that is all-inclusive. The only thing in the article that I am a little wary about is the fact that people are so inclined to suggest that forgetting an individuals name is at the same level as harassment as neglecting an individual’s position due to a skin color or sexual orientation. Even with their sweeping changes, it seems like they are more or less trying to do what J. Goode was arguing against in the sense that they are essentializing diversity in the workplace to make it seem more diverse instead of actually addressing the issue. If the roots of a tree are rotting, you dont just prune the fruit to heal it. The next idea that is kind of strange is how they address the fact that they are now working to seek a better truth and fully understand the world. It may be nave to think, but as a news organization, I would think that their goals for truth should be what is actually wrong instead of just something that is happening as a result of multitudinous events over the course of time. The best comparison that comes to mind is relative velocities. When two cars are driving on the freeway they are aligned only when they are traveling at the same velocity; however, as soon as one changes the perspective of both vehicles changes with respect to each other. J. Goodes statement regarding the treatment of people as a commodity with exclusivity comes to mind seeing that they are making sweeping changes only because of external influence. I do keep in mind that business moves at a specific pace and what is important quarter to quarter changes, but instituting changes as the result of something that has been brewing is like putting a band-aid on a sore that arose due to an underlying disease. Local field changes are good, but to what extent they actually improve peoples lives depends on the people there and not just regulations to enforce diversification.

In the 1970s and 1980s, university campuses became significant centers of action for cultural identity movements. Ethnic studies programs were in high demand, and they became gathering places for a new generation of community intellectuals to develop a shared political awareness. Today, however, many university administrations employ multicultural programs for their own goals, such as defusing conflict and marketing “multiculturalism” to attract and retain new students. Such shows frequently revert to and promote a naturalized and essential zed image of limited, objectified cultures with monolithic historical narratives and iconography.
The week 2 article provides essential elaboration concerning sensitive cultural concepts, including; cultural relativism, multiculturalism, culturalism essentialism, and ethnocentric. The presentation clearly states the meaning of culture, indicating it refers to the ability to develop and share/transmit beliefs, traditions, and symbols that is unique to humans. It is crucial to note that culture is learned and not biologically inborn. These values and ideas are shared among people of a given community. The concepts of ethnocentrism call for an individual to consider their culture have more superior to the cultures of others. In cultural relativism, the phenomenon presents an opposite viewpoint from ethnocentrism, acknowledging that one culture than not is considered as the standard measure of other cultures. According to scholars, this concept is well thought since each culture has strengths, weaknesses, and advantages and disadvantages that are not related to different cultures.
In the presentation of week 3, Globalization is a concept that has had an impact on the culture and people’s view on culture. Interconnection on a global scale increased support for marginalized identities, threats to national unity, human rights violations, and the rise of identity politics are all issues that must be addressed. Neoliberalism is a modern version of traditional economic liberalism. However, it is currently linked with reduced government expenditure on social programs, disinvestment in public institutions, deregulation, more extraordinary austerity measures, and privatization in its contemporary global context. According to the presented information, it is true that multiculturalism refers to ethnic communities’ interaction and communication with one another without sacrificing their own identities. It can refer to a place with a diverse ethnic population and numerous cultural traditions. The only concept that the information failed to address is a trivialization of culture in areas where culture has been eroded because of modernizations and other factors that influence enculturation.
