Classical Sociological Theory
Instructions: Write an essay of at least 1500 words (approximately 4 double-spaced pages) on the following topic.
Topic: Write a review of the movie, Lord of the Flies, (DVD included in your course package) which shows how this movie can be interpreted and understood from several different theoretical perspectives discussed in the first five units of the course. You are required to analyze this movie from the perspective of (at least) two (2) of the following theorists: Rousseau, Hobbes, Comte, Spencer, the Romantic Conservative theorists, or the early Feminist theorists. You are also required to use (i.e., to define, to explain, and to apply) at least four (4) key concepts associated with each of the theorists that you have chosen. Your paper should be organized around the following general themes, or sections:
- Introduction (to the movie)
- Plot and Characters (summary)
- Alternative Theoretical Interpretations (for example; Rousseau versus Hobbes, Spencer versus either or both Rousseau and Hobbes, Romantic Conservatives versus the Feminists, etc.)
- How social theory can clarify a movie (examples of how key concepts can be used to analyze the movie)
- Conclusion. Ensure that your account makes fully documented use of the relevant course readings, as well as any outside sources. This is your opportunity to become a theorist.
Your paper should be no more than four (4) pages in length, double-spaced (not including the bibliography). Don’t let the length fool you. This should not be something you whip off the night before. The best papers will probably start out about 7-8 pages long, but get edited down to 4 pages of pure gold in the final draft.
In order to submit an acceptable assignment, you need to show that you have read and referenced the relevant course materials. In other words, you need to reference your sources throughout the paper, and to add a full bibliography of your sources at the end of your paper.
References should be provided as in-text citations either in APA style or ASA style (contact your tutor if you need further guidance on this topic). While documenting your sources, please bear in mind the following considerations:
- avoid providing general (unpaginated) footnotes (for example; Ritzer, 2008) without citing any page references. Your citations should always contain specific page references.
Remember that “footnotes” do not—literally—have to be dropped to the foot of each page; they can be inserted into the body of your text—as in text citations—APA style or ASA style (let us know if you need further guidance on this topic).
- also, some (but not too many) direct quotations from the course materials would help to strengthen your paper; and
These readings should take priority over any outside readings, although—while it is not a requirement—you may also use outside sources to supplement the course materials if you choose. Also, you should know that your paper will also be graded for writing skills: sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, etc.
Finally, although none of the suggested dates for submitting assignments are mandatory deadlines (you are free to submit assignments any time during your course contract period) you should try to observe these guidelines and avoid sending all your assignments in at the same time. When all assignments are submitted simultaneously, you will be unable to use the tutor feedback to improve your grades throughout the course.
