FAS 270 Final Project Guidelines and RubricOverviewThe major project for this course, the comparative film history analysis paper, will assess your knowledge of one or more important examples of world film and, inparticular, your ability to think critically, contextually, and comparatively about the history of film. Through analyzing a great film using a comparative and historicalperspective, you will explain how your film expresses the concepts and vocabulary unique to the history of film while at the same time revealing the ideas andtechniques of its director, his or her particular cultural background and/or artistic intentions, and the stylistic and thematic elements of its time period and/orcultural or stylistic movement, for example modernism, expressionism, impressionism, and so forth.To prepare for this project, please review Timothy Corrigans A Short Guide to Writing About Film, especially the first four chapters where he discusses why and howpeople write about film. Note the different purposes writers have in writing about film, and the different types of writing they produce. In this project, you will focuson one interesting variety of writing about film: the comparative film history analysis.The comparative film history analysis is a critical essay that explains something important about a film and/or the ideas and techniques of its director. It is not anoverview, review, description, plot summary, or survey of the directors career, although it may contain some element of these simpler forms of writing. Instead, thecomparative film history analysis is a critical essay that explains an aspect of a film (and/or the ideas and techniques of its director) with reference to somethingoutside the film itself, which will be called the comparative element. Please review this handout, which discusses the comparative elements.This assessment will measure your mastery with respect to the following course outcomes: Analyze major movements, styles, and genres in the history of film through the use of key terms and concepts Assess the impact of the cultural and technological forces on filmmakers and filmmaking Evaluate the thematic and stylistic connections between film and major movements in the history of art and ideas Compare and contrast historical and artistic contexts for their influence on major developments in the history of film Analyze filmic techniques and methods used in different genres and time periods for their application in filmYour work on this project will continue throughout the course. The project includes two milestones, which will be submitted during the course to incorporatefeedback and ensure quality final submissions. The first milestone, the topic proposal, will be submitted in Module Three; the second milestone, the rough draft, willbe submitted in Module Five. The final paper will be submitted in Module Seven.PromptThe following critical elements must be included and addressed in your project:I. Craft an introduction that gives your reader the WHICH and the WHY.a) Which film are you focusing on? And which major comparative element will you use to frame your film history analysis? Your introduction shouldprovide the following as fully as possible:1) A complete identification of your chosen film, with reference to the name of the director and major actors, release date, country of origin,and style movement (if appropriate or known).2) A clear statement of your major comparative element and your question regarding the relationship between the film and the majorcomparative element.b) Why did you pick this film and these comparative elements? Why do they work well together?1) Provide a one-paragraph justification for your choices of film, comparative element, and question that explains why they are relevant,historically significant, and/or important.2) A preliminary or tentative answer to your chosen question in a well-crafted thesis statement that indicates the primary focus of your paperand how your film relates to its major comparative element.II. Include a brief background section that contextualizes your film in time and space.In the body of your paper, as you develop your comparative analysis of your chosen film, make sure to provide the following information:a) Historical/Cultural Context: How does your film relate to its historical context, time period, and national or cultural origin?b) Filmic Context: How does your film express the visual, thematic, and technical features of your directors style or the films style period ormovement?III. Provide a detailed analysis by comparing and contrasting your film with its major comparative element.a) Identify the historical, visual, conceptual, technical, formal, or structural similarities and differences between the two.b) Support your main points about these similarities and differences with specific observations (drawn from your viewing of the film itself), and clarifyhow the specific scenes, characters, plot, or filmic techniques you analyze help to support your ideas about the relationship between your film andits major comparative element.c) Explain why the similarities and differences you are seeing are important. Your analysis should reflect further understanding of key course conceptsand language used in the analysis of film history and the humanities. Here you should refine your thesis statement in answer to the question youdeveloped in Milestone One.IV. Sign off with a strong conclusion.Use your conclusion to revisit what you have illustrated throughout your paper in support of your thesis. What was the main point you were constructingabout the relationship between your chosen film and the major comparative element on which you focused your paper?Milestone One: Topic ProposalMilestonesIn Module Three, you will submit your topic proposal via the Discussion topic. After looking over the List of Great Films provided for this assignment, choose oneof the films on the list and propose your topic by identifying the comparative element and the main question you are trying to answer in your paper. Provide a briefstatement (a minimum of one short paragraph) that justifies your choice of film, comparative element, and the leading question you are trying to answer. You maywish to consult our course textbook and supplemental resources, including Corrigans A Short Guide to Writing About Film, in preparation for this and othermilestones. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone One Rubric.Milestone Two: Rough DraftIn Module Five, you will submit a rough draft. The prompt for this essay will help you begin identifying, contextualizing, and comparatively analyzing your chosenfilm with reference to the main question you are answering in your paper. Be sure to analyze the film for its historical context, time period, and national or culturalorigin. Ground the paper in the context of how the film expresses the visual, thematic, and technical features of the directors style or the films style period ormovement. A full draft is crucial to your success on the final paper because it will provide your instructor the opportunity to give you detailed, constructive feedbackon your preliminary ideas. The feedback and suggestions you receive on this essay can then be incorporated into your final paper. This milestone will be gradedwith the Milestone Two Rubric.Final Submission: Analysis PaperIn Module Seven, you will submit your final analysis paper. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final project. Itshould reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded with the Final Project Rubric. This rubric is found below.Final Project RubricGuidelines for Submission: Submissions should adhere to the following formatting requirements: 12-point Times New Roman font, double spacing, 4 to 6 pages inlength not counting your Works Cited page, and appropriate MLA formatting for a minimum of four or five academic-quality citations.
