The first step is to decide on a topic. Search the collection at metmuseum.org for an artist that interests you. Any period or culture is fine, but choose someone whose work you find interesting and would like to learn more about.
You should begin your research as soon as possible. The Grove Dictionary of Art in the librarys reference section is a good starting point. AU subscribes to a number of online databases through which you can access journal articles (JSTOR will be particularly useful since it includes important journals like the Art Bulletin and Art News). You can also check out books from the library or request materials through I-Share if you are near campus. You need at least five sources, and at least one needs to be a scholarly article from a refereed journal (journal articles you find through JSTOR). Be selective with online sources. Museum and university websites and reputable news outlets are good; blogs, Wikipedia, and other open-edited sources are not acceptable sources for an academic paper and will not be counted as sources. You must cite your source every time you use ideas or words from another author in the text of your paper and include a reference list at the end. Any style of citation is fine (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc).
As you are now getting to know your artist and his/her work, you can begin to think about the approach you will take in writing your paper. As with nearly all academic papers, you will have an introduction ending with a clearly worded thesis that indicates the main direction of your paper, followed by body paragraphs that support the thesis, and ending with a conclusion that sums up your paper and hints at its significance.
Remember, your thesis is the point/claim/argument that you will be making in the essay. Make sure you have a thesis and that you support it with evidence (from your sources or your own visual analysis).
Questions to think about as you create your thesis:
Why is my artist important?
What is interesting about my artist?
Is there any pattern of development in the work of my artist over time?
Was my artist strongly influenced by any events or other artists or art forms?
How personal or impersonal is the work of my artist?

Checklist for a Thesis Statement:
Does the sentence make a claim rather than just offer a description?
Is the claim arguable rather than self-evident and of little interest?
Can evidence be used to support the claim?
Is the claim narrow enough to be addressed in this length of paper?
