U.S. Constitution
Introduction to the Assignment
This is one of the few assignments that I use that I feel the need to introduce the activity. In this assignment, you will be discussing what you believe to be genius about the U.S. Constitution. You also have the opportunity to state that nothing is genius about the 200+ year old document, so long as you give a well-written, thought-out, and justified response. I am well aware that each of us come from different backgrounds and have different stories to tell. I am also well aware that many people struggle with thinking critically (i.e. being able to answer "why I know what I know" and "what irrefutable evidence supports my position") and choose to believe the massive amounts of incorrect or biased information put in front of them daily. With that being said, this assignment is not intended to cause strife or an argument. It is not intended to serve as a political soapbox. It is simply an activity that is relatively fun and causes each of us to look at the individual parts of the Constitution, as well as the Constitution holistically in order to derive the intent of a document that serves as the baseline for all legal precedents in the United States.
With that being said, this assignment is derived from a movie called With Honors (1994), which stars Joe Pesci and Brendan Frasier. Particularly, this activity is based on the video clip below. Check it out and then continue with the rest of this assignment.

Assignment Instructions
In your own words, write a paragraph about what you believe to be the genius of the U.S. Constitution. If you do not feel the U.S. Constitution to be genius, then please defend your reasoning.
When writing your paragraph, please adhere to the following requirements:
- Place your full name, the date of submission, and the course number (each on a separate line) at the top-left corner of your document.
- Use proper English, punctuation, and grammar.
- Use Times New Roman font, sized at 12 pt and double-spaced.
- If you reference materials that you did not create (i.e. the textbook, the Constitution itself, etc.), be sure to cite the source appropriately using APA (preferred) or MLA format. This means you should not only include an in-text citation but also a references or works cited page.
Your paragraph should demonstrate critical thinking. Don’t give a simple and superficial response – be thoughtful, thought-provoking, and dig into the Constitution. Use anecdotal evidence as necessary to demonstrate why you believe a certain part of the Constitution is (or is not) genius.
Grading Criteria
50% – Discussion of Constitution’s Genius: student’s paragraph both identifies and explains why the students believes the Constitution to be genius (or to lack genius)
