Paper Guidelines:
Your final paper for my section of this course must be typed with a minimum of 2000 words excluding references, captions etc. You must present at least two scientific points of view on your topic and cite at least one peer-reviewed scientific article per point of view. National Geographic, Scientific American and Internet journals are not peer-reviewed; the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Nature and Science are peer-reviewed. Consult a reference librarian if you are unsure. Reference all materials used and note the date any web materials were accessed. All citations should be in the same format. I recommend using either MLA or APA format, but whichever format you choose, make sure it is used consistently throughout your paper. Additional notes to consider:
· A research paper is not the same as a review paper. Your paper should not resemble a Wikipedia article, i.e. an overview of many aspects of the topic.
· Citations are mandatory
· The goal of a research paper is to focus on a specific aspect of the chosen topic based on reputable sources. The more narrow the topic is, the more focused and successful your paper will be.
· Chemistry is fundamental to every aspect of our life, that is why it is called the ‘central science’. Thus, any topic you choose has underlying fundamental concepts rooted in chemistry and composition of matter (physical or biochemical) and you should be able to identify these sources of knowledge with correct source attribution.
· Whatever topic you choose your goal should be understanding the fundamental science and be able to explain it to a broader audience.
· I encourage you to include schemes of relevant chemical structures/devices/processes to aid in depth discussion of your topic.
· Only after explaining the science behind your topic, you can discuss its implications or political/economical/social/ethical controversies using scientific fact as a platform.
· An example of accessible language would be a NY Times editorial on any life sciences topic.
