English 101 Essay 3
Write an essay of at least 1250 words (in Times New Roman 12 point font, double-spaced, with one inch margins) in response to the prompt below. If you have a different idea for what youd like to write in response to one or more of the assigned readings, you may email the instructor your idea to see if its appropriate.
Frederick Douglass, Maya Angelou, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Claudia Rankine, Rebecca Solnit, and Barack Obama all explore in different ways how Black lives have not always mattered in our society. Analyze ONE of their texts (the ones in our syllabus as assigned readings) along with additional research to demonstrate ONE particular way in which Black people have faced oppression, past or present, and how that oppression has affected them. Try to be as specific as possible. To the extent that the oppression you write about continues into the present, you could (optionally) make a case for what you think would be the most effective ways to remedy it.
Research and Citation: You are required to incorporate at least two research sources that enhance your understanding of your topic and support your argument. The assigned readings do not count as research. All sources should be relevant, credible, and appropriate for academic work. Instead of Googling, use the databases available through the ELAC library (Links to an external site.) to find credible sources. Cite the readings youve used from our textbook and any research source you use both parenthetically and in a works cited page in MLA format at the end of your essay. If you need to brush up on it, review the Purdue Online Writing Labs MLA guide (Links to an external site.).
Tips for students:
– You wont be able to write successfully unless you have a strong understanding of the assigned reading. Re-read the text with this essay prompt in mind as part of your pre-writing process. Analyze the text, using your interpretation to support you points. Include quotes and be sure to explain the quotes meaning and significance.
– Express one overall main point in a clear thesis statement, and spend the rest of the essay supporting your thesis. Likewise, you should use topic sentences to clearly state the main point of each body paragraph.
