Sustainability Project

Purpose: Discover ways in which food systems can be optimized to improve the food supply in underserved/developed areas. (MLO1,MLO3)

Assignment Objective: Develop an innovative approach to enhance sustainability in an existing food systems program that addresses food insecurity in a developing country.

Outcomes:

1. Identify a program that addresses food insecurity in a specific developing country.
2. Assess gaps in programming to support sustainable food systems initiatives.
3. Develop an innovative solution to enhance the existing program.

Instructions:

Developing countries face many public health problems. Among them is the matter of food insecurity. There are currently global initiatives targeting populations experiencing food insecurity to provide creative and innovative ways to reduce food insecurity and promote self-reliance. This assignment allows the student to discover and outline existing sustainable food system programs in developing countries that target food insecurity and propose an innovative approach to enhancing the program. 

1. Select a developing that experiences high levels of food insecurity and that you would like to learn more about. 
2. Research the demographics of the country and identify reasons/causes for food insecurity for the population as a whole or a subpopulation. 
3. Identify a non-profit organization/program which supports food systems to address the needs of the population you have chosen. Explore gaps in the system such as an organization that collects food to distribute to those in need, but is challenged by the transportation of foods to that population. 
4. Based on the information you have gathered, develop a suggestion or idea that supports sustainable food systems to help fill the gap you identified. Think about the cultural norms, religion, health beliefs, and other factors that can help support your idea. Is your solution realistic? What would you need to help you implement this idea? 
5. Explain why you chose the solution you did. How does it help you to be more culturally competent? 
6. Use at least one resource other than what is provided to you in the course content.

You will turn in a written report that includes a synopsis of the answers to the above questions 

Assignment requirements: 

Report: 

• The report is a minimum of 700– 1100 words and will be submitted as either a .doc, .docx, or a .pdf. 
• The report includes a cover page (that is not included in the word count) with your name, course title, and date.  
• The report is typed in 12-point font, and double-spaced. 
• The report includes at least 2 references: one from the textbook and at least one scholarly article. 
• The report is formatted in APA style (Links to an external site.).  

• Turnitin is used for all written assignments to check for plagiarism. 

Resources Needed:  textbook and one outside resource
