Sociology reflection – Social Psychology
Second paper, on Levi, Survival in Auschwitz (If This Is a Man) and Hallie, Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed
For this paper you only need to write reflections on those two books on the top – SURVIVAL IN AUSCHWITZ AND LEST INNOCENT BLOOD BE SHED – i HAVE UPLOADED COPIES INCASE YOU CANT FIND ANY .. WE DONT NEED TO CITE JUST OWN THOUGHTS
Your grade for the course will be based upon three papers, each worth 1/3 of the final mark. These papers, on course lectures and readings, are to involve NO extra research. Do NOT include citations or references to any sources other than the required assigned readings listed on this site. You should aim for papers of around 12-15 pages in length, and your papers should offer convincing evidence that you have read the assignments, listened to lectures, and developed your own thoughts in response to what you consider the most important ideas presented. Any indication of plagiarism, any copying of text, of whatever length, from any other source without attribution, will be treated as academic misconduct meriting a zero. (With attribution it would not be academic misconduct, but evidence that you have not followed directions.) In your papers present and elaborate upon the ideas presented in course material, offering evidence of your understanding of it, as well as indicating the thoughts, reflections, questions that came to you as you engaged with it. Your paper should convey a sense of the unique encounter between you as an individual and the material.
Proofread your papers for typographical errors before submitting, and – as in all essay writing – give particular attention to crafting your opening and final paragraphs, your introduction and conclusion.
For my last paper – This is how my instructor felt about the paper I wrote (wirth a score of 70%)

In writing an essay on a book never refer to the author by first name alone. You can refer to the author by last name alone, hence “Hrdy introduces” but not “Sarah introduces.” Yes, a capacity for intersubjectivity is for Hrdy a defining trait of human nature. But when you write that it is “acquired” you miss her argument that this is an inborn capacity that evolved over more than a million years. Good point about the mask use showing human capacity for quick change and adaptation. In future essays it would be helpful to make an outline of your argument and of the major points you plan to make. You spend a lot of time on Hrdy’s early airplane scene but don’t sum up what she is trying to explain, or the manner in which she accounts for the long term evolution of the distinguishing traits defining human nature. Use paragraphs more. Try to avoid having whole pages with a single paragraph. When you switch from one idea to the next indicate the change with a new paragraph. Being excluded from adult conversations might or might not be the same as being treated as a non-person. If you were allowed to be present, but treated as if you were not there, for example by being talked about as if it didn’t matter if you were there or not, THAT is being treated as a non-person. Your treatment of Goffman’s ideas is good. A reminder to think of individuals as performing for an “audience”, often with teams of supportive others. And to think of the self as having to be presented, confirmed by the witness of some audience, some reference group, in order to exist. (Of course sometimes the audience might also be just the self—humans can be both performer AND audience to their own act.) |
