Social Capital Exercise
OVERVIEW
Building and nurturing global social capital as well as engaging strategically and listening to diverse voices are essential for gender intelligence, as well as long-term career success and leadership development. This assignment will leverage all of these critical skill sets as well as expand your understanding of gender intelligence at a practical and global level.
THE ASSIGNMENT
You have been tasked with exploring and reporting on the Gender Intelligence landscape in the East Asia Pacific region. As part of this exploration, you will engage in a cross-sector canvassing approach — researching and interviewing/listening to leadership on the gender intelligence front from the private sector (leading companies in the region) as well as the public sector (national governments and multilateral quasi-governmental institutions) as well as the non-profit sector (leading NGOs, grassroots efforts, thought leaders). You will also attempt to interview at least 3 senior leaders — one from each sector — with insight and a compelling point of view on these issues in your designated region.
Once you have collected your raw insights, you will develop a short brief on key takeaways, insights, as well as your projections for where gender intelligence is going in the region you are task with exploring. You will also devise and share a shortlist of further resources for your peers to continue their learnings on this front — thought leaders to follow, key journalists/editors/media who are consistently covering these issues in the region, as well as provide a shortlist of companies they should keep on their radar. Companies who are not only getting it right but who are actively leading on the gender intelligence, equity, and inclusion front.
You should plan to outreach over email, LinkedIn messaging or another similar platform that allows them to respond with written responses should they not be able to participate in a 1:1 interview. Here are some sample questions to consider engaging your social capital contacts with (this is by no means an exhaustive list and I encourage you to tweak these, add, or amend as you feel most appropriate):
(1) Is the East Asia Pacific region gender intelligent? Why or why not? And is this improving or devolving over time? Can you share some specific insights, stories, or examples with us?
(2) What are the barriers/challenges to promoting gender intelligent practices in your industry/sector?
(3) What does being gender intelligent at work mean to you? Is this a value you personally care about? Is this a value your organization cares about and is engaged in?
(3) Do you have any recommendations for working effectively across gender in your industry/sector, region/country?
DELIVERABLES
After you have collected your responses you will distill down common themes, insights and identify areas of opportunity for Gender Intelligence in your assigned region of focus. You will then develop a short brief as outlined above. Please include the answers of the interview for me, please.
Regional Gender Intelligence Brief — 1000 words w/ Exec Summary.
This brief should encapsulate your gender intelligence journey and exploration of your designated region. You are expected to weave insights, key takeaways, trends of note as well as anecdotes and stories from your social capital interviews. Additionally, you will collectively project where you think gender intelligence is going in your region and outline what we should be paying attention to — what are the key signals of change and trends on this front that we should follow, who are the thought leaders we should take seriously and listen to/learn from, which governments care about these issues and are working to address it at the national/regional level, and which companies are leading on the gender intelligence front.
For this assignment, you must use APA formatting, references, and citations. Do not use footnotes.
Please include names and positions (maybe Linkedin) of the people you will interview. I don’t care if you find someone or make someone up, I just need it to look believable and I need a LinkedIn profile or something close, just in case they decide to search the person. Include the answers of the interviews also. Thank you.
