• The Age of Enlightenment in England emphasized the role of reason and order in discovering the meaning of the universe, believing primarily in logic and what could be observed. As often happens throughout history, the movements following the Enlightenment era–the Romantic Age in Europe and the Transcendentalist movement in America–went in the opposite extreme, emphasizing individual perception and spiritual awareness. Considering the culture and mentality in America, do you think American society in general is closer in philosophy to the logic focused Enlightenment era or the Transcendentalists, such as Bryant, Emerson, and Thoreau? 1-2 pages is sufficient for your response.
