Students will be required to complete a research paper by Week 7 of the course. In preparation for this research paper, an outline will need to be completed (during Week 5) in order to help prepare the student to complete a great final project. Here are the details of the project:
Students should recall a recent visit to 1 or 2 retail establishments (ex. Walmart, Whole Foods, Best Buy, Macy’s, Nordstrom, etc.). [Students can also take an online virtual tour of these types of places or use their own employer.] Using Figure 2.3 (Elements of a Service Culture) of the textbook as a guideline to determine the level and quality of the service culture of each organization visited. As part of your note-taking, answer the following questions about each organization:
Did you notice (or recall) any overt signs that indicated the organizations’ cultural philosophy (mission or philosophy statements on walls)? If yes, what were they?
In what way was service delivered and how did the delivery indicate the organization’s philosophy related to customer service?
What do the organization’s products and services say about its approach to service (quality and quantity, availability, and service support)?
What evidence do you recall seeing of management support for the service initiatives being used by employees?
What indicators of motivators and rewards did you notice (employee-of-the-month or -year plaques; parking space for employee of the month; visible indicators of rewards on employees’ clothes or uniforms, for example, items such as pins or buttons)?
Were there any indications that training of employees is occurring (employees have a consistent greeting or closing: “Thanks for shopping at ______________”)?
Next, research at least 2 COD-library business articles that deal with the service culture in an organization. After conducting some research, students should write an outline, then the paper detailing their findings from both theory (textbook and research) and the real world (field trip findings).
The outline will be a precursor to the paper. It will allow you to organize your thoughts and research for this project. Use the textbook for items and concepts related to this topic. You have control over how you want to approach this topic, as long as you are writing about the culture of the organizations you have witnessed relative to your research.
Ultimately, students will be required to submit a 5-6 page paper. Students must utilize and reference the textbook, at least 3-solid internet sources (no Wikipedia, About.com, online books, book reviews or blogs) and at least 2 COD-library resources to support their work. At least six (6) total references.
