The impact of COVID- 19 in the Quiroga family
In the spring of 2019 there were whispers of China being infected with a virus due to bats. While the world watched in silence, little did American families know what was going to happen. March of 2019 you couldn’t buy toilet paper let alone two packs of water. Supplies ran dry and there was no guns or ammunition on the shelves. Covid 19 took lives, jobs, and sanity. Covid split families apart and started to effect the economy. That’s where the Quiroga family comes into this. The interest in this group stems from the diversity of race, religion, ethics, and morals. Even from being cut from the same cloth the differences are astronomical. George was born in New Jersey in 1966, coming from humble beginnings and the love of politics George when into running campaigns for big-shot politicians. ” Since the day I could remember I knew I wanted to become a politician.” Then you have Rosangel a mother of two children who came to America eight years ago. From running a major clothing company in Mexico to becoming Georges’s right-hand man so to say. Rosangel is the complete opposite to George, she hates politics.” The two most important thing you never talk about with a stranger is religion and politics.” Next comes Andreas, the son of Rosangel. Andreas came to America with his mother and sister eight years ago. Andreas considers himself the black sheep of the family. ” when I was about five years old I knew I was way different than my sibling or even my family. I hated going to church every Sunday and just wanted to listen to Black Sabbath and play my guitar.” Last but not least is Dusan, he is the boyfriend of Andrea’s sister. Dusan was born in the states in 1999 shortly after his family came here as refugees due to a civil war going on in his Motherland. ” Growing up in America with foreign parents was a tough thing to deal with, juggling my “American” life and Serbian life was a challenge. The way I was brought up compared to my friends was a night and day difference.”
These four people range in age, race, morals, and belief so how did COVID 19 affect them? The question that was asked was, How did you feel when you found out COVID was not a joke. All four of them responded worried, but there reasoning where different into why they were worried. Andreas said because he just got a new job and was afraid to get laid off, George said he was worried about contracting the virus, Rosangel said she was scared when so knew it was true because she heard that older people have a higher chance of dying. Lastly Dusan was worried about COVID because of his sick grand parents. Right after the next question was will you be getting the vaccine. This resulted into a huge debate in-between themselves. George’s response to this question was that he got vaccinated and he felt as if it should be mandatory to get the vaccine because it will saves lives. Rosangel also agree with George. As of Andreas and Dusan they dismissed the idea of getting the COVID vaccine. Andreas said he wouldn’t get the vaccine due to the government making him nervous. ” Why is the government begging us to take the vaccine when they never begged us before.” Dusan sailed a bit differently from everyone. ” I could care less whether someone gets the Vaccine or not. I am not going to get it due to personal choices but I do think it would be smart for our elderly to get the vaccine.” The last question that was asked was, How did COVID hurt you the most? Every last one of them said the same thing, “Not being able to see each other.”
No matter your race, religion, ethics, morals, or disagreements COVID hit this family where it meant the most, and that’s family. Without being able to see each other due to the fear of getting one sick whether they felt if COVID was real or fake they wouldn’t risk getting each other sick. They all yearned for Sunday dinners, laughs and teasing one another, even having those heated debates. The Quiroga Family is just one tiny speck of what this virus has done to the millions of families in America and the world. Dusan closed off the discussion by saying ” If I learned anything in 2020 while living through this pandemic is that seriously you don’t know what is coming next so cherish each moment with friend family and your own self.”
