Wayne Gretzky – the Greatest
Many people call the famous hockey player, Wayne Gretzky “the Great One”. He is considered to be the best player ever to play in the National Hockey League (NHL). Gretzky considered to be the best player ever due in part to three things; his incredible skills, his records, and his influence on hockey in Canada. In the up coming paragraphs, I will discuss how these 3 factors make him the greatest player of all time.
Wayne Gretzky had superior skills to other players in the league and his, “finesse and speed revolutionized the sport” (Editors). It is said that he could see more of the ice than other players and because of his skills he could anticipate where other players would be on the ice. It is no conincidence that he has more assists than any other player has points (Ava). Gretzky made all of the players around him better and it didn’t matter who you put with him on his line.
Gretzky holds many records including most goals, assists, and points. What is incredible is that despite his retirement over 20 years ago, Wayne Gretzky has many records that stand to this day and one, “that isn’t likely to be broken is his eight straight Hart Trophies” (Gross). Many of his past linemates had their best seasons with him and many of them are in the Hockey Hall of Fame as well. Gretzky’s greatness is reflected by both his individual and team achievements.
Gretzky is still incredibly popular in Canada. He is still so popular in Canada that, “within the Toronto Public Library system, there are apparently 50 books that make reference to Gretzky” (Ava). Gretzky has had a huge influence on the Canadian national identity and when he expresssed his disappointment in Canada’s performance in the 2000 World Cup of Hockey he, “was named executive director of Team Canada’s Olympic Hockey Team for the 2002 Games” (Marsh & Commito). His input and emphasis on speed and skill, helped Canada win it’s first Gold medal since 1952 (Marsh & Commito). Gretzy is truly a Canadian icon.
I think you will now agree that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time. He is great for many things; however, three things which stand out are his many records, his amazing skills, and his influence on the game of hockey. Furthermore, much of his greatness comes not just individually, but from how he was able to get the best from other players. There have been many great hockey players in history, but only Wayne Gretzky can be called the Great One, which means the greatest of all time.
