ASSIGNMENT:
1. For second part of Deaf Survivor, you will go to place with deli to order food. Needs to be place where you have to gesture with employee to get your food.
- Here are several examples: Subway Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors / Cold Stone Deli at Haggen/Albertsons/Safeway/Top Food/Starbucks Place with food served behind glass counter.
- Examples of where you should not go: Place serves buffet style food and you can serve yourself. McDonalds Burger King Arbys Any restaurant with combo meal.
2. Gesture or point (without voice) what you want to eat. If they offer paper and pen, you may accept and use paper and pen. You may not use ear phones or ear buds to block out sound and/or listen to music. Deaf do not use these devises.
3. A receipt is required. Your receipt must be neat! Do not crumple! Will not accept your project without a receipt. If you do not have a receipt, do the activity again…and get a receipt.
4. Upload your receipt and any additional notes to this assignment with your response paper.
6. Describe your experience in a response paper as directed below.
FORMAT:
- Type using font size 12, Times New Roman.
- HEADER (single spaced) In the top left corner of your first page type:
- Your first and last name
- Class section
- Project number and article title
- Date you finished
- REPORT (double spaced)
- Leave no extra spaces between paragraphs, questions or sections.
- At least one full page in length; may be longer.
QUESTIONS:
- Store name and location (city).
- Day (date) and time you shopped for food. Did you go alone or with someone? Why did you make that choice? If you went with someone, with whom did you go?
- What food items did you buy?
- How did you tell store clerk what you needed?
- Describe your communication with each clerk. Easy or difficult? Smooth or rough? Patient or impatient? Confusing or clear?
- When you gestured for help, how did each store clerk respond to you? List 3 observations of how each store clerk reacted to you … specifically because you are Deaf. Record behavior such as nice, impatient, too helpful, using big lips, excessive nodding, etc. Some people will write back. Some people will gesture. Some people will not help. Do not use your ears to listen to their voice. Youre complete Deaf. Write complete sentences.
- Based on your experience, how do you think Deaf people would feel if they received the same reactions you received?
- Were you tempted to use voice? Why or why not? Elaborate your thoughts.
- Describe how one of the Five Hallmarks described in Introduction to American Deaf Culture impacted your experience during this project.
