Part 2:
Now, that you know what literary criticism is, let’s practice writing some.
Choose a poem of at least 10 lines written by one of the following poets:
John Keats
William Blake
William Wordsworth
T.S. Eliot
Walt Whitman
e.e. cummings
In your response, identify the poet and the poem you have chosen. Create a 300-word essay that describes the content, tone, and structure of the poem.
But wait….what are these three elements?
- Content—this is the information in the poem, or the main idea. What is this poem about? How do you know? Be sure to cite (Last Name Line Number).
- Tone–this is the speaker’s attitude toward the subject. What kind of attitude does the speaker use when talking about the subject of the poem. Again–be sure to cite!
- Structure—this is how the poem is crafted. How many stanzas? How many lines? Is there a rhyme scheme? No need to cite here, unless you want to be fancy and quote the rhyme scheme!
This is your chance to give your opinion as a reader (and a critic!) about the main idea of the poem, the tone the poet uses toward the subject, and the way the poem is arranged. Be sure to cite from the poem to support your ideas for each of these topics. There is no “wrong answer” here because it is your opinion, but there is an unsupported answer—and that will need to be revised.
Provide your opinion of the work, and please type out, or provide a link to, the poem at the end of the essay so I can see what you have read.
Part 3:
Now that you know what literary criticism is and you have practiced being a literary critic, it’s time to figure out whether or not you actually agree with what other critics.
Find an example of literary criticism in regards to poetry. Here are a couple good places to start looking:
Provide the link where you found the specific criticism you are discussing. Then create a 200- word essay evaluating and providing your opinion regarding to the nature of the criticism. Do you agree or disagree with the criticism? Explain why.
Please note: Sometimes criticism are difficult to find without having access to a scholarly database. You are welcome to use the following criticism for the poetry of Langston Hughes for your Part 3 if you are having trouble finding one.
