Introduction:
In addition to understanding music immediately and experientially, an important skill weve been working to develop this semester is understanding music in a historical context as an important social and political phenomenon. This assignment will be an opportunity for you to exercise both your research and your critical thinking skills as they relate to music.
You will have a choice of format for this assignment. Either, you will create an Adobe Spark website or you will record a podcast episode. This choice is up to you! Both will take around the same amount of time and have the same word count requirement, so choose the one that most appeals to you.
Requirements:
Either Adobe Spark page or podcast episode format
1500 words minimum
If you opt for a podcast episode, you will need to submit your transcript, which should meet the 1500 word requirement. A 1500 word transcript will translate to around a 15+ minute long podcast.
Word counts below the requested count will receive a lowered grade. Word counts above 1500 will not be penalized. Please use the space needed to cover your topic well.
Minimum of 3 different written sources cited
There is no upper limit on the number of sources you may cite, provided they are relevant to your topic. These sources can include journal articles, books, news articles, podcast episodes, etc. Use these sources to provide the who, what, when, where, how information. They must be cited using either APA or MLA formatting.
Minimum of 3 audio musical sources included
If you are creating an Adobe Spark page, this will most likely be youtube or vimeo videos embedded in the page.
If you are creating a podcast episode, this will be audio examples played during the episode.
Either way, you must include at least three music examples that demonstrate information relevant to your topic.
Wikipedia is not a source. Please do not use wikipedia (or any other wiki) as one of your sources. If your research takes you to a wikipedia page, look at the citations at the bottom of the page, click through, and consider those sources.

- Explore effective communication in visual or audio formats
Outcomes:
- Practice effective writing techniques, using the course grading rubric found in your syllabus and SJSU GE writing expectations as your guide. (If you have trouble with writing mechanics, dont hesitate to use the SJSU writing center for help and advice.)
- Utilize critical thinking to shape your thought process and writing.
- Understand where to find information related to music and its many expressions
- Feel prepared to discuss music in a historical and social context and relate music you experience to a broader background
Instructions:
This is at its heart a research paper.
You will be spending some time reading in addition to listening and will practice combining your observations with published literature on the genre/form of your choice.
First, you will need to select a genre or form! I have attached a list of possibilities below and would encourage you to select from this list if you aren’t sure what you’d like to research. Choose a genre you do not regularly listen to. I dont want to hear about what you already know, but rather what you learn through your research.
Second, choose your format – either Adobe Spark page or podcast episode. This will help you start to shape your writing.
Third, youll need to develop your work along two lines.
Please cover both history of the genre as well as modern expressions of that genre. For example, if I chose to discuss kabuki theatre as my genre, I would need to both give a brief description of the history of kabuki as well as talk about when, where, and how it is performed today.
Fourth, during your research, you will need to listen to examples of this genre and select the examples you will use in your finished product. Youtube, Soundcloud, and Wikipedia are good places to start searching for examples of a given genre.
Finally, be sure to discuss any political or social implications related to that genre. For example, if I chose to discuss South African rap, I might include a discussion of how it is often a vehicle for discussions on race relations and politics in South African society.
