Imagine a genogram as a family tree with much more detail about how the family members interact with one another. A genogram becomes most valuable when it includes information about several generations. Patterns that are usually hard to decipher seem to jump out once they’ve been mapped on paper.
Genograms fit in naturally during the assessment portion of treatment. Not only can genograms provide great information about your client, they can also inform you about family history of mental illness, which can give insight into possible diagnoses.
During family therapy, a genogram can also be used as a way to measure progress. Completing genograms at various points throughout treatment may help you and your clients see when and where there have been improvements to relationships.
All too often the importance of family is ignored during individual therapy, and genograms are a great way to make sure that your client’s roots are not forgotten. In the same way that a person’s ethnic or religious culture can shape their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, so can their family culture. For this reason, clients struggling with a wide range of issues can benefit from learning about their family.
The use of genograms in family therapy can be tricky because family members may see their relationships very differently from one another. However, these discrepancies can also be very telling.
For this assignment, please create your own family genogram. There will be 2 parts:
1) You must include a picture with 3 generations of family (Example: you and siblings, parents, and grandparents would be three generations). You can create this online or draw it and upload a picture.
2) Write a 1 to 2-page double-spaced reflection that explains and describes your genogram. Who is in your picture? What are the relationships and dynamics like? What was it like for you to do this assignment?
You can imagine the family as being mexican living in texas, United states. The immediate family consists of a mother (mexocan) and step father (salvadorian) with 3 kids (one mexican, the other 2 american). The biological dad has not been seen for 6 years. The grandparents used to live in mexico before they died. Use this information for the assignment.
Part 2: Please write a 2-page double-spaced reflection paper on this course. In your reflection please touch on some of the following:

– What are some things you learned that will be most helpful for you in the future (personally or professionally)?
– How has this course influenced you?
– Anything else you would like to add about the course and your experience!
