Multiple Intelligences
Howard Garner’s theory of multiple intelligences, or the idea that human intelligence is composed of a varied set of abilities rather than a single, all-encompassing one, is very popular among those working with children. As adults, not only do we have multiple intelligences, but knowing our own strengths and preferences can help us better support children.
Instructions
Step 1: Download and complete the (You do not have to upload the completed form.)
Step 2: Based on your completed MI Inventory, respond to each of the following questions (2 points each):
- What are your top 3 and bottom 3 intelligences? Was this surprising to you or did it confirm what you already know? Explain your response.
- Do you see a pattern in the group (interactive, analytic, retrospective) that your strengths fall into? What do you think your learning styles tells you about the career that you might get into?
- Do you feel that your learning styles (as identified in this exercise) were supported by your PreK – 12th-grade teachers? Explain your response.
- How can you incorporate your multiple intelligences into your college coursework? What changes could you make to your study/learning routines that would connect with your intelligences?
- Why is it important for a teacher to know the intelligences of the children in their class? Why is it important for a teacher to know about their own intelligences?
