An organization’s culture consists of the values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors employees have and use on a daily basis in their work. The culture determines how employees describe where they work, how they understand the business, and how they see themselves as part of the organization.
As a consultant, you will often be tasked with assessing organizational cultures and providing advice to organizations regarding ways to change that culture in order to develop and/or enhance organizational creativity, cohesiveness, leadership, and values. To help you gain some experience with this process, this assignment will require you to make contact with a client. (This client organization may be external to or within your current organization). Please note this is a professional document from your consulting firm to your client and must be professionally formatted (please see the DSL writing guidelines in the ‘Start Here’ section of the course).
The organization must be willing to let you consult and have a representative group of people in the organization complete the OCAI (Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument) based on the competing values framework. Using the OCAI results, write a consulting report to the senior leadership of the client organization presenting both the results and your professional recommendations.
Note that this project is scored using the ‘Major Project Rubric (not QEP)’. Please click on the underlined ‘Major Project’ heading above and review the rubric so that you know how the project will be scored.
This project is estimated to take 20 hours. Your reading on values, culture, and OCAI is already done. If you plan on eight hours of interacting with the client collecting data and discussing the results then you have 12 hours to write the consultant’s report. Remember that the report should be in a polished professional format matching the invoice you will present. This type of consulting report could be seven to ten pages in length or about 3000 words. If you type at 35 words a minute you need 1-2 hours to type. But, let’s presume you type at 18 words a minute and plan on 2-4 hours to type. This leaves you with eight hours to process the data, analyze, and think through the report.
