Instructional Scaffolds in Mathematics Instruction for English Learners With Learning Disabilities: An Exploratory Case Study
This assignment has a few steps:
- Locate a research article from a peer reviewed journal that discusses a specific learning strategy to assist English Learners who have learning disabilities. It may take some time to find this article. The article must be: a) in a peer reviewed journal b) an actual research study, not a discussion, professional guide, or literature review c) published 2012 or later, and d) specifically researching any aspect of instruction for both English Learners AND Learning Disabilities. Upload the article into the assignment submission folder.
- Write a 3-5 page critique of this article, with one more page that is a reference page. This is a report that is written in paragraphs, has a heading for each section, and includes a separate reference page.
Section 1 is a summary section, and includes: introduction (why was this article selected?), research questions (what were they trying to learn?), study participants (characteristics, such as: ages, disability types, geographic locations, etc.), research procedures (what did they do in this study?), results and analysis of results (what did the researchers learn?), and limitations (in what ways do we need to be cautious about forming conclusions based on this).
Section 2 is your own response to this article, and includes a) logical explanations of what you view as strengths and weaknesses of this research b) how, specifically, this research can be used to inform classroom instruction and c) what you would recommend as next steps to continue this research.
The Reference Page is a separate page and is written in APA style. It includes your article and any others that you use in your discussion.
3. Check your critique using all assignment directions, the assessment checklist, and the syllabus requirements. a) Be really, really careful about plagiarism. For every sentence, it has to be clear if this is your own thought or if it is paraphrasing of the article. At least once in each paragraph that has paraphrasing, in-text citation of the article must be used. All other sentences in that same paragraph that also paraphrase must be linguistically connected to this. b) Check the spelling, mechanics, APA style, headings, syllabus requirements, etc
