Within your topic, there should be some aspect of controversy. The controversy might be related to the use of a product (e.g. e-cigarettes), using a particular type of treatment (e.g. cancer drugs), or a hypothesis (e.g. a certain fad diet causes weight loss).

Instructions

Introduction: Present the background for your topic from general to specific, state your specific focus, the structure of your paper and your thesis statement.  Draw your readers attention. Explain any necessary information related to your topic and lay the foundation for your argument.  Approx 150 words

Body – They say.  Review the literature briefly. Approx 250 words

Body – I say.  State your own position in a “claim”.  Introduce and discuss the supporting evidence (2-3 pieces of evidence). Approx 500 words

Body – my critics say. State the counterargument, then introduce and discuss the supporting evidence.  

Approx 200 words

Body – I respond.  Your rebuttal to the counterargument supporting your thesis. Demonstrate you have thought critically about the topic and explain why you have sided with one of the above arguments. Approx 250 words

Conclusion: Explain why this topic is important and why your reader should care about it. Reiterate key points and summarize what information should be taken away.  Go from specific to general. Approx 150 words

Requirements

• 1300-1500 words (5% leniency), double spaced, 11-12 pt. font, Times New Roman or Arial, 1-inch margins
• Cover page with a Title, Date, Course, Supervisor/TM and your Name
• Page numbers
• In-line citations and full bibliography required for each (see Referencing below)
• APA formatting
• Formal or semi-formal language
• Include a word count at the bottom of your document (citations but not full reference list can be included in your word count)
• Marks will be deducted if the requirements stated above are not met

Grading Criteria

Your paper will be graded according to the following criteria:

• Logical organization of material/good flow of writing
• Effectiveness of message/ability to intrigue a reader
• Content/use of quality evidence
• Accuracy of information
• Writing style/grammar/spelling
• Use of multiple appropriate and high-impact sources
• Correct and full in-line APA citations and referencing

Referencing

Use APA format. You are expected to reference at least three academic sources (a scientific journal article, or a .gov, 

.edu, or possibly .org website). Higher marks will be awarded to students who not only use academic references but use them logically and use the most credible ones. Both in-line citations and a full list of references are required.
