Human beings are natural storytellers, and we tell stories (also known as narratives) in natural patterns and progressions. We tell stories to connect to other human beings, to learn about ourselves, and we read stories to learn from each other.
Prompt: Write a story in essay form about a moment in time that has impacted you greatly, or changed you, especially in terms of choosing the healthcare field.
Think about the story that you’re choosing to tell, and why it is meaningful. For example, maybe you wish to share the story of a relative’s heroic battle with cancer and the nurse who did everything in his power to comfort and care for not only your relative, but the family members as well. The meaning of this story may be that it inspired you to become a nurse.
Note that you are not writing in pure short story format, but rather in Academic Essay Format, as we have learned about in Week 3, with an Introduction (to provide context for the story and its meaning, and the central idea of the story, the thesis statement); a Body (to develop the main points of the story and present the emotional high point); and a Conclusion, (to tie the narrative back to that central idea presented in the introduction and offer the wisdom found it the story).
Your essay must include the following:
* A clear thesis in the introductory paragraph
* Clear (narrative plot structure) organization and flow
* Full development of ideas
* Evident meaning or importance to you, relayed to the reader
* Few to no Mechanics, Usage, Grammar, Spelling (MUGS) errors
* A word count of at least 750 words
The topic which I chose to focus on is how and why I wanted to become not only a nurse but what fueled my passion for OB nursing.
For a climax I chose to focus on one of the very most special days of my life, the day my beautiful daughter Charley suddenly and precipitously came rearing into the world.
For a thesis I want to add a sense of wonder and inspiration . It will go something like "It was right then that I held the cord, the lifeline of my newborn child that I knew I wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse, a profession where I could witness miracles like my own every single day!" My wife and I were in the hospital from midnight with imminent labor taking place .. she was in hospital room and it was around 1p in the afternoon labor progressing slowly , nurse came in frequently to check on us. My wife felt like she had to use the bathroom -I went to her side to ask her if there was anything I could do. Nurse came in room to check and pulled up the covers and there my daughter was crowning . There were no time for gloves or even a doctor present. It was the nurse and I . We caught my daughter , the cord wrapped around her neck the nurse told me to go grab scissors from the drawer . I went quickly and got them and she had me hold the cord so she could cut it and release the pressure from the danger of the cord strangling my newborn daughter . It was at this moment in time I knew-an epiphany from God -that I wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse .
