- The final exam consists of three questions, each worth 100 points.
- Number each question.
- Number your pages.
- A good answer to each question should be about 3-4 double-spaced pages (750-1000 words) long using a standard 12-point font and 1″ margins all around.
- A good answer to each question will be guided by a thesis and supported by examples (evidence) from the text.
Question 1. (100 points): Write an analysis of the Brooks, Slade, Miller debate from the standpoint of the course readings. What ideas are reflected in each of the authors’ works? To what extent do you see them trying to impose ideas from one historical context on the present?
Question 2. (100 points): Using evidence from all the semesters readings, write a thesis driven answer to the following questions: Are the economy and society the same thing? To what extent is your answer to this question contingent on the period of time under discussion?
Question 3. (100 points): Compare one of the unassigned economists in Great Economic Thinkerseither chapter 5 (Marshall), 10 (Nash), 11 (Kahneman), 12 (Sen), or 13 (Stiglitz)with one or more of the thinkers we have studied already.
- How would each define the nature and purpose of an economy?
- How are each of their views contingent on historical context?
- How would each answer the question, “Are the economy and society the same thing?”
