Question 1. Answer one of the prompts below:

1. Tom Wingfield and Walter Lee Younger are very similar characters. Both are frustrated by their lives, families, social positions, and futures. Both men are representative of an essential anti-hero given their dire situations, negative behaviors, and choices, and impact on their respective plays. Examine their lives, ambitions, and do they finally get what they have been searching for?
2. The Younger family seems to be inundated with women. And for better to worse, they shape Walter Lee’s life. Examine the three women of Walter Lee Youngers world: his sister Beneatha, his wife Ruth, and his mother Len. How does each of these women shape Walters relationships, actions, and values 
3. In answer to someone who thought the place ending was too happy, Ms. Hansbury responded, I invite him to come live in one of the communities where the youngers are going. Write an essay, using evidence from the text that the ending is happy (or at least hopeful) or sad (i.e. promising new and terrible struggles for the family). Also, considering that the play was written and produced over 40 years ago, to what extent do you think that the complex issues presented within the play are still relevant to a modern audience?

This journal entry should be in 1-inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, and minimum 1,510 words. Be sure to use multiple direct quotes from the play to strengthen your observations and arguments. It should express your own specific opinion on what we have read. These journal entries will be checked for plagiarism – please review the plagiarism section. The grade for each paper will take into consideration not only the content of the argument but also the precision of the writing, so each piece needs to be carefully proofread before it is submitted. (Do not mix the answer to this question with question 2) 

Question 2. Several minor characters have a major impact on the story. Though many of the characters are somewhat stereotyped, each serves an important function within the play. Choose a minor character explaining their significance as far as character development, plot complications, and/or thematic emphasis. And pay special attention to Mrs. Johnson. For budget reasons, the character of Mrs. Johnson was cut in the original production of the play. Why does Mrs. Johnson say that the Youngers are “proud”? Do you feel that the scene is essential to the play? If so, why? If not, why not? What does the scene tell us about the world in which the Youngers live? (Minimum 3 paragraphs are required and do not mix the answer to this question with question 1)
