Length: 2,000 words minimum (approximately 8 pages).
Structure: Students should develop a clear introduction with an easily identifiable thesis statement. The student should then present the argument, giving examples and explaining the importance of the chosen examples and how they affect/relate to the thesis. Do I have a primary source? (And does it fit the actual time period I am looking at?)

Are my secondary sources academic/peer-reviewed? (e.g., quality academic sources and not just TSN, oilersnation.com, so-and-so’s-blog, etc…)
Is my thesis (argument) clearly stated/obvious?
Is my thesis compelling enough? (Does it demonstrate “critical analysis”?)
Is my paper too broad/vague? (Am I trying to say too much in such a short paper?)
Am I trying to cover too many time periods? (e.g., the ENTIRE history of the women’s game)
Is my paper “historical”? (i.e., you should be looking to the past and not “now” or the “future”)
Does my paper employ historical specificity? (Do I name names, use concrete dates, a specific time period, etc…? or do I only discuss in vague terms?)
Am I using Chicago-Style (foot/endnotes)? (no one was seriously penalized on the proposal, you will be if you don’t use Chicago on your paper)
