Effects of Punctuation and Abbreviation in CMC
My topic is to write on the specific effects of punctuation in computer-mediated communication (CMC). CMCis texting, emailing, social media direct messages, any form of online communication.
Your topic might be spurred by one of the concepts, theories, studies, etc. discussed in one of the course texts, but it could also be independent of those texts, as long as it connects to the broad rubric of the course theme. One thing you might consider is exploring parts of the course texts not discussed extensively in the course–there are a lot of ideas there that might spark an interest in delving deeper into an academic conversation. It’s also perfectly fine to focus on topics already discussed and/or written about, since nothing we’ll have done will have exhausted a topic.
This is not merely a literature review, meaning that your task is to put forth an analytical argument, not just report on what others have written and done. Of course, you will need to get a firm grasp of the state of the academic conversation and lay it out in your essay, but you also will need to add your voice to that conversation.
You must use a minimum of 15 secondary sources as support in your research paperremember that you can use sources to back up your own points, to offer alternative views that you will counter, or something in between.
Your intended audience(s) will be determined by you: your essay can be directed to academics in a specific field, policymakers who might implement particular suggestions, a more general audience like the reader of Words on the Move or Because Internet, etc. It is up to you to define your audience and tailor your essay to them.

Requirements:
- The submitted file must be a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx)–if you are using a different word processing program/application, you will need to save the file as a Word document.
- The document needs to follow the conventions of formal essays: double spacing, a standard font, 12-pt font size, standard margins, and indentation of the first line of a paragraph.
- Your essay must be at least 2500 words (not including the Works Cited), with proper attention to mechanics, grammar, and syntax. There is no official maximum word count, but try to avoid exceeding 3000 words.
- Your analytical argument must be set up with a clear thesis statement that lays out an arguable claim, followed by body paragraphs that develop specific points to build a case for that claim, with direct textual evidence used to support those points.
- Even though you are putting forth your own argument, be sure to avoid overly personal tone (–avoid using first- and second-person pronouns such as I, me, my, we, us, our, you, and your, for example).
- You must use at least twelve weighty and credible secondary sources that are appropriate for an academic research paper. Remember that the course texts are considered primary sources and thus do not count toward this total (though they still should be included in the Works Cited if you cite them in your essay). Encyclopedias and dictionaries are reference works, which are tertiary sources (items based on secondary sources), so they also do not count toward the total.
- When you provide specific examples from the texts, include in-text citations that follow MLA style guidelines.
- Include a Works Cited page that follows MLA style guidelines. Remember that the Works Cited should be on its own new page (but still part of the same document–do not submit a separate file for the Works Cited).
