American Nurses Association. (2014). Fast facts: The nursing workforce 2014: Growth, salaries, education, demographics & trends (Links to an external site.).
Review the data presented in the ANA Fast Facts and describe some of the key attributes/characteristics of this sample of the nursing workforce.
Discuss some of the data that you found interesting; include what you believe the purpose (intent) of ANA sharing these results.
The instruments and tools that we use to collect data need to be reliable and valid. Define these terms and explain the importance of each. Share one way that can be used to collect data that you were not aware of or familiar with.

I live in Wisconsin and I learned that it is among the 15 states with a high concentration of RN with 1 nurse for every 100 patients. California is the highest paying but I could not believe that in San Francisco the average Registered Nurse makes $131,800! Another fact that surprised me was the need for 1.13 million nurses. This means that there continues to be a shortage of nurses. For this reason, there is the government needs to raise the incentives, especially regarding income to reduce the income gap between nurses in different states. Percentage of nurses licensed between 2010 and 2013 who were male: 11 percent (ANA, 2014). Percentage of nurses licensed before 2000 who were male: 5 percent (ANA, 2014). I believe the ANA wanted to make a point that more males are becoming nurses. There are different instruments and tools to collect data. Instruments measure variables (captures the data). Instruments must be reliable and valid in order to yield useful data results/analysis (CCN, 2021). The lessons of this week define reliable and effective tools. Reliable instruments measure a variable with precision and consistency (CCN, 2021). Valid instruments measure in a manner that is accurate and truthful (CCN, 2021). The most widely used data collection method is surveys (Houser, 2018). In the survey method, a systemic tool is used to gather information directly from respondents about their experiences, behaviors, attitudes, or perceptions (DeVellis, 2011).
NEXT STUDENT:
I reviewed the random study conducted by the ANA “Fast Facts The Nursing Workforce 2014: Growth, Salaries, Education, Demographics and Trends”. This fact sheet presented a couple of interesting things to me. One is that as a practicing RN in Tennessee, we are one of the lowest salaried states for RN’s per the U.S. Department of Labor. I just completed a salary review for all my staff. This review exposed the fact that my company pays RN’s more than the local hospitals, several dollars on the hour more. That really peaked my curiosity so I had to dig a little deeper. According to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2018, Tennessee was still in the bottom 10 states with the lower salaries offered for nurses. Big states like California and Hawaii are the top 2 highest paying states. You have to be cognizant of the fact that the higher paying states have higher costs of living, so Tennessee salary overall may be competitive.
ANA also had some statistics regarding the demand for nurses and the looming shortage of nurses. Tennessee is predicted to only be able to meet the demand of RN’s by 50% in the next few years. This is any RN, with 2 year or 4 year degree. To help with the looming shortage, Tennessee is partnering with the government to invest in nursing educators and help retain nurses that are currently in practice. Retaining nurses at this time is a challenge in itself. The average age for nurses is 50. At this age most are looking toward retirement and easier workloads. When they don’t find what they are looking for they choose to leave. This creates vacancies that are very difficult to fill.
Reliable means good in quality or performance: able to be trusted. Valid means it has a sound basis in fact. For research purposes this means reliable is a consistent measurement (the same result under the same conditions) and validity means the measurement is accurate. For example, if I took the NCLEX 20 times and passed it every time it would be reliable in testing my ability to think like a nurse. It would also be valid as it would validate what I learned in nursing school.
