1Watch this clip from the show Mad Men: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBrV1EMjmbQ. For those unfamiliar with the show, it is a drama about a successful advertising agency in New York, set in the 1950’s. In this scene, you will see the protagonist, Don Draper, making a pitch to Kodak to produce their next ad campaign. Watch the clip, and pay attention to the persuasion techniques Don uses.
Using at least 3 concepts from our book and/or mini-lecture, what techniques do you notice Don Draper using (or not using) in this scene? Do you see those techniques as being effective or ineffective in this context? Explain your thinking.

Here is the 1st responsive post
Don Draper first establishes credibility with the client by telling a bit about his history, old jobs, mentor, and how he was successful in the past. He also is dressed appropriately and professionally, and is embodying the persona of what he wants to be perceived as. This sets the framework as him being the trusted professional. This is effective because a client would want to have trust and confidence in the person they’re trusting with their strategy.
He also frames for common ground. By turning the lights out and showing the photos, and discussing nostalgia, he is making the clients look inwards and solicit an emotional response they can relate to, even if the exact photos or scenarios aren’t the exact same. This is effective because many people make decisions based on emotions, even when they think they are making decisions logically.
He also uses the technique of reinforcing with an appeal to emotion or basic instincts. By telling them that they can "time travel to a place where they know they are loved", it makes the people seeing the ad have the emotional desire to have that feeling, rather than the product. This is effective because it’s much easier to convince people to make a decision based on something they know they want (the feeling) rather than the complex and expensive product that they don’t fully understand.
Here is the 2nd one:
First and foremost Don Draper established credibility by being well put together. This concept (Positive Impression/Appearance), creates rapport and demands respect. It looks professional and he is immediately taking serious. Apart from his suit he is also well groomed and physically fit and looks to be well mannered. These are a few more things that will give you more respect in the workplace. This is referred to as “physiognomy” which I’ve always found very interesting, which essentially meanings characters are judged by their facial characteristics.
The second technique Don Draper uses is expertise, to be shown as credible he talks about his first job and previous experience at an old fir company. He talks about what he learned from “an old pro copyrighter named Teddy”, and how in advertising the most important thing is “new”, because it creates an itch. This shows that he is knowledgeable and he’s presenting his knowledge in a very compelling and interesting way.
The third technique is composure. Don Draper body language shows a relaxed easy going presence. His movement is natural and he fills space. He has a “presence” about him.
One technique he uses to create composure is he stands still, his legs are heavy. He isn’t pacing up and down the office, he’s talking confidently and standing still.
Don is very effective in his pitch by using these three aforementioned techniques; establishing credibility, showing expertise, and having a cool composure.
2.Read through this scenario, and imagine that you are Chris, getting ready to delegate this task to Dale: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oIepQ5gbB4SFMcZWST-lSkb9F_JAIvQo4DmHXkjY_88/edit?usp=sharing
Drawing on guidance from the book and/or from the mini-lecture, describe at least 3 important points that you would be sure to account for in your conversation as you delegate to Dale. Be specific in describing how these would inform your approach to this task.
Here is a responsive post for q.2:
COLLAPSE
Chris needs to include 3 activities when delegating the role over to Dale, which are (1) the assignment of responsibility, (2) transfer of authority, (3) and establishment of accountability (Janasz et al., 2019, p. 475).
1. The assignment of responsibility- Chris must be open and honest to Dale, so Dale knows exactly what is required to do the annual budget. Dale will need to fully understand the assignment to complete it, which is Chris’s responsibility. I would make sure Dale knows the task and expectations that are required to do the annual budget.
2. Transfer of authority- To delegate the annual budget to Dale, Dale must obtain resources to complete the task. I would also make Dale aware of where he can find the data needed to complete the annual budget, as in this scenario, it says, " all data Dale needs will be in Chris files or can be obtained from other managers." I would show Dale where these files are so he knows where to get them when needed. I would make sure to inform other managers and employees that Dale will be doing the annual budget this year so (1) there is no conflict when Dale tries to access files from another managers office, (2) other managers don’t hand over more work to Dale, as his focus and time need to be going into the annual budget, and (3) so payroll knows how many hours will be going into this, so Dale gets paid accordingly.
3. The establishment of accountability- I would make Dale aware of the importance of doing the annual budget and explain how it is due in 8 weeks, so time should be used wisely. This annual budget should prioritize other tasks, and it may require extra hours of work to get completed. I would make him aware that he is our first choice to do this task; as the chief candidate to replace Chris when he is promoted, this would give him experience as the annual budget would become his task when Chris gets promoted. This way, Dale would feel appreciated and encouraged by this task. I would also communicate to Dale that if he has any questions, feel free to ask.
3.What factors make it challenging to solve problems in your current or prior workplace? What changes or actions are required in order to achieve more constructive and creative solutions?
