Google, like so many other companies that operate in multiple countries has a fine line to walk with maintaining the value of human rights and remaining in service. Google must maintain a set of rules and operating parameters for the United States where free speech is at a completely different level than the rest of the world as well as other sets of rules and operating parameters for countries with strict speech laws and regulations on internet content. While google has done what appears to be their best to keep the values of human rights in their operating model, getting in a stare down so to speak with China in 2010 and allowing the search engine to use an unfiltered version which was contradictory to the governments direction could have resulted a lot worse consequences than just shutting down for the last ten years.
For any company that wants to join the world market and distribute products all over the world preparation is the biggest thing they must do. They must understand the local laws and guidelines for any location that they will be dealing with. As Rebecca MacKinnon stated, Its about anticipating in advance what positions youre going to be put in and deciding in advance whether thats an acceptable position to be in. There are companies out there who will help with setting up your company for success when dealing with international issues. Additionally, companies such as Global Network Initiative will assist with any challenges that pertain to privacy and digital human-rights. The main goal is to be prepared for any situation that will come up and find a solution that is both ethically responsible and follows the local laws that the company must abide by. To that same end there must be procedures in place to verify the legality of requests by local governments to ensure they are not overstepping their bounds.
Bribery is an unfortunate part of many business dealings throughout the world. Many countries are not as transparent as the United States when it comes to financial transactions to speed up processes. In many locations not providing a bribe may cause people to intentionally slow down the process. In fact, the United States simply changed the name from bribes to facilitation payments or processing fees which are the equivalent to bribes to many people. Technology companies just like any other company out there are susceptible to violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. In fact, they may be more susceptible because as fast as tech companies are expanding and how fast the market for them is changing, some might feel the need to skirt the rules to gain an edge on their competition. This is where the companys leadership must adhere to the laws of the countries they are working in and maintain the ethical standards to sustain their companies.
