Chapter 3: Description of the Alternatives
Section 1: Summary of the Project
Begin Chapter 3 with a brief summary of the problem. This summary will serve to refresh the readers memory and to provide a frame of reference against which to relate the rest of the chapter.
Section 2: Description of the Alternatives
Describe as completely, clearly, and concisely as possible at least three alternative solutions to the problem being considered. One alternative must include the Status Quodoing nothing, as that is always an option. This will be a description of the current program, policy, procedures, or method of doing things.
Each alternative should be discussed in terms of the following:
- A description of the solution or intervention. This may be a new or revised program, policy, or procedure; a choice between two or more systems or programs; a make or buy comparison; a cost/benefit analysis, etc.
- A history and background analysis of the alternative. The literature review may suggest a certain alternative. Indicate where it originated, where it has been tried, and what other authors have said about it.
- Describe all the resources needed to implement the alternative. For the status quo, what resources are currently being used? Include in the description the required time, money, people, equipment, and other resources.
- The steps required to implement the alternative. Describe a plan of action for implementing the alternative: activities, procedures, etc.
- A description of all the advantages and disadvantages of implementing the alternative. This needs to be sufficient to show the reader the alternative under consideration is serious even if it has certain limitations.
For each alternative, include a discussion of its likely impact on the organization.
